The bear necessities: good water, healthy forests, and a five-paw review from the locals.

Our Conservation Team is currently conducting a black bear population study using a non-invasive technique called a hair snare, which collects fur naturally left behind by black bears. Those samples help us better understand bear populations around our protected watersheds and provide insight into the overall health of the ecosystem.

This study will also help support projects with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources and Clemson University.

This is the kind of training you hope you never need, but always want to be ready for.

Recently, our watershed team partnered with Glassy Mountain and Green River Fire Departments for a simulated rescue training scenario on our watershed property.

The exercise involved rescuing an individual in a staged ATV accident, using ropes, a boat, and a medical helicopter. It gave our teams the chance to learn more about how local fire departments respond during emergencies, so we can better support them when it matters most.

Our teams often work with fire departments through controlled burns and land management efforts, but this was the first multi-agency rescue training we’ve hosted. It’s another step in building strong, prepared partnerships across our watersheds.

We’re grateful for these departments, their expertise, and the time they spent training with us. These are the kinds of partnerships that help keep our people, our communities, and our source water protected.

A sneak peek inside our Adkins Water Treatment Plant (WTP), where water from Lake Keowee is treated before distribution through the system.

The infrastructure shown here pumps treated water to our Cedar Rock storage tanks, supporting reliable service across the Upstate.

Back in 2004, we completed a 30-million-gallon expansion project at this WTP as part of our proactive approach to growth in the Upstate. Now, Adkins can pump up to 90 million gallons of water per day.

The Fire Learning Network has helped shape how we manage land around our water sources. That includes using controlled burns to reduce wildfire risk, restore healthier habitats, and prepare for emergency moments like the Table Rock wildfire. We’re truly grateful for the partnerships.

There’s something special about slowing down, sharing a meal, and making space for real conversation. And that’s what our CEO, Jeff Boss, does every month while also celebrating our team member’s birthdays.

Their feedback and suggestions help us continue improving Greenville Water and delivering exceptional service to the communities we serve.

There’s another side of the water quality story happening quietly throughout our protected watersheds.

Greenville Water’s Conservation Team uses trail cameras to monitor wildlife and better understand the overall health of the land surrounding our water sources. By tracking the animals moving through the area and observing changes over time, our team gains valuable insight into how the watershed ecosystem is functioning.

A healthy mix of wildlife is often a strong indicator of healthy forests, streams, and habitats, all of which play an important role in protecting clean, reliable drinking water for the Upstate.

Both or our Table Rock and North Saluda watershed are protected and closed to the public, giving our water sources another layer of protection.
