Spirea comes in many colors and sizes, but they all bloom in spring to summer with mass amounts of flowers. They grow best in full sun with moist soils. Prune to size immediately after the flowers are spent to prevent removing any buds for next year's flowers.

**Of note, โ€˜Spirea japonicaโ€™ is considered an invasive species of Spirea and can still be found in some stores. Check the label on plants that you purchase in order to avoid this variety.**

Oak Leaf Hydrangeas bloom in late spring to early summer. The white flowers fade to pink as they mature. They must be pruned immediately after blooming to prevent removing buds for next year's flowers. The flowers are a desired attraction early in the year, but the foliage color change in the fall is an added bonus to look forward to!

Ajuga are low growing ground cover plants that bloom in late spring to summer with purple flowers. They spread easily as they get older spreading in small clumps. Morning sun is great to help them flower, but afternoon sun in our area is too harsh for them to survive.

Dianthus are perennials that bloom in the late spring to early summer. They come in a variety of colors, and since the flowers are edible, they are often used in drinks and to decorate cakes. Plant them in an area that has well draining soils with afternoon shade and they will thrive.

Pieris, or Lily of the Valley, are evergreen, shade shrubs. They grow well in shade with just a few hours of morning sun. They bloom in spring with drooping masses of bell shaped flowers. Their new growth starts as a orangish red color where it turns dark green as it matures. They are slow growing, making them low maintenance. If you prune them, do it just after they bloom in the spring to reduce the risk of reducing the next year's blooms.
