This Memorial Day, the Wade Hampton Fire Department honors the men and women of the United States military who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation.

Their courage and devotion to protecting others reflect the very spirit of service that inspires first responders every day.

While many will spend the holiday weekend enjoying time with family and friends, we hope everyone will also take time to remember the true purpose of Memorial Day and honor those who gave everything for our freedom.

Please join us in remembering our fallen heroes and keeping their families in your thoughts today and every day.

We are forever grateful.

This Memorial Day weekend, our firefighters will be in the community again supporting a cause that makes a real difference for local families recovering from tragedy.

We’re proud to partner with LEO Santa for the annual Memorial Day Weekend Boot Drive, with 100% of proceeds going directly toward the Reignite Hope program. This incredible initiative helps children who have lost everything in a house fire by giving them the opportunity to replace some of their favorite toys, electronics, and personal items alongside the firefighters who responded to the incident.

For families facing one of the hardest moments of their lives, these experiences help bring comfort, hope, and healing. It also gives firefighters the chance to reconnect with families in a positive and meaningful way after the emergency is over.

You can support the boot drive from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. daily this weekend (Saturday, May 23 - Monday, May 25) at:
📍 Taylors Walmart – 3027 Wade Hampton Blvd.
📍 Magnolia Park – 1025 Woodruff Rd.

Last year, departments across Greenville County raised approximately $35,000 for this effort. This year, with 14 participating departments, the goal is even bigger.

If you see firefighters collecting donations, please consider stopping by to support this outstanding cause. Every dollar helps bring hope back to children and families after devastating fires.

If you’re unable to attend in person, you can still support the effort through the QR code provided by LEO Santa.

Thank you for helping us make a difference in the lives of local families.

When an emergency happens, every second matters.

One of the simplest ways to help first responders find you quickly is to make sure your house numbers are clearly visible from the street, especially at night.

The Wade Hampton Fire Department encourages residents to take a few minutes to check their address visibility.

Make sure your house numbers can be easily seen from the road.

Use reflective or illuminated numbers if possible.

Trim bushes, trees, or decorations blocking the view.

Check visibility both during the day and at night.

In an emergency, responders shouldn’t have to search for your home when time is critical.

Take a quick look tonight. Can you clearly see your address from the road?

The Wade Hampton Fire Department encourages residents to keep electrical safety in mind this spring and summer by following a few simple tips:
• Avoid overloading outlets and power strips
• Use extension cords only as a temporary solution
• Check cords and plugs for fraying, cracking, or excessive heat
• Make sure window AC units are plugged directly into a properly rated outlet whenever possible

One warning sign people should never ignore is heat or a burning smell coming from an outlet, cord, or appliance.

If something feels unusually hot or smells like it’s burning, unplug it immediately and have it checked by a qualified professional.

A few quick precautions now can help prevent a dangerous electrical fire later.

From phones and laptops to power tools and e-bikes, lithium-ion batteries are part of everyday life.

What many people don’t realize is that when these batteries fail, they can overheat quickly and start fires that spread fast. We’ve seen an increase in these types of incidents, and they often happen inside the home.

A few simple precautions can make a big difference:
• Use only the charger designed for your device
• Avoid charging on beds, couches, or other soft surfaces
• Don’t leave devices charging overnight or unattended
• Stop using any battery that looks damaged or isn’t working properly

If you notice a battery getting unusually hot, swelling, or giving off a strange odor, move it away from anything flammable and keep a safe distance. If you’re concerned, don’t hesitate to call.

These are small habits, but they go a long way in preventing fires before they start.

HOME SAFETY BLITZ BY THE NUMBERS

This past weekend we were proud to join the Boiling Springs Fire District, Fire Safe South Carolina, and the American Red Cross in bringing a Home Safety Blitz to Del Norte Estates and Eastgate Village. The results speak for themselves.

We installed:
▪️ 529 smoke alarms,
▪️ 109 carbon monoxide detectors, and
▪️ 6 hard-of-hearing alerting devices (bed shakers).

Each one of these represents a home that is now safer and better prepared.

Beyond the numbers, this effort was about helping neighbors. It was about taking time to talk through fire safety, checking existing alarms, and making sure families have a plan if the unexpected happens.

We’re grateful to the residents who welcomed us into their homes and to our partners who made this effort possible. Working together, we’re continuing to build a safer, more prepared community one home at a time.

If you weren’t able to participate and need assistance with smoke alarms or fire safety, don’t hesitate to reach out to us.

Even when outdoor burning is allowed, that doesn’t always mean it’s safe.

This time of year, we often see dry conditions, shifting winds, and low humidity. Those factors can cause a small fire to spread faster than it normally would. Many of the brush fires we respond to start as controlled burns that got out of hand.

If you’re planning to burn yard debris, and there's no burn ban in place, please take a few minutes to do it safely:
• Check current conditions and any local guidance before you start
• Keep a hose or other water source within reach
• Stay with the fire at all times. Don’t walk away (even for a minute)
• Make sure everything is fully out before you leave the area

If a fire begins to spread, don’t try to handle it alone. Call 911 right away.

We’d much rather help early than respond when things have already gotten out of control. Stay safe and use caution.

SC FORESTRY COMMISSION TO ISSUE STATEWIDE BURNING BAN

RESTRICTION ON ALL OUTDOOR BURNING GOES INTO EFFECT 7 A.M. FRIDAY

COLUMBIA -- The South Carolina Forestry Commission is issuing a State Forester’s Burning Ban for all counties, effective at 7 a.m. Friday, April 17.

A State Forester’s Burning Ban prohibits all outdoor burning, including yard debris burning, prescribed burning, campfires, bonfires and other recreational fires in all unincorporated areas of the state.

Forestry Commission officials cite a particularly dangerous mix of elevated wildfire risk factors through the weekend that warrant limiting all ignitions in the interest of public safety.

Rapidly escalating drought conditions across the state, a critical decrease in relative humidities over the next several days and gusty winds that are expected to accompany an approaching cold front will combine to create extreme fire danger.

"When it’s this dry – energy release component values are at high-to-critical levels – we’re just as likely, if not more, to see wildfires that are fuel-driven rather than wind-driven. Add the other volatile conditions of increased wind and lower relative humidity, and it becomes an especially precarious situation,” said SCFC Fire Chief Darryl Jones. "These conditions not only increase the likelihood of wildfires igniting easily and spreading rapidly, but would also make them more difficult for firefighters to control.”

While the ban does not apply to fires used for the preparation of food or fires used in appropriate enclosures (portable outdoor fireplaces, chimineas or permanent fire pits constructed of stone, masonry, metal or other noncombustible material that conforms with all applicable South Carolina fire codes), Forestry Commission officials urge the utmost caution burning outdoors under these exemptions.

Likewise, citizens should exercise extreme vigilance operating any equipment that could create sparks, avoid parking on dry grass and refrain from using fireworks.

The ban will stay in effect until further notice, which will come in the form of an official announcement from the Forestry Commission.

We’re getting ready to head to Del Norte Estates and Eastgate Village for a two-day Home Safety Blitz, and we hope to see you there Friday and Saturday (April 17 and 18) from 9:30 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.

The Wade Hampton Fire Department, alongside our partners at Boiling Springs Fire District, Fire Safe South Carolina, and the American Red Cross, will go door-to-door to make sure your home is as safe as it can be.

When we stop by, we’ll:
▪️ Check your current smoke alarms
▪️ Install new or replacement alarms if needed (free of charge)
▪️ Share simple, practical fire safety tips
▪️ Help you think through a home escape plan

There’s no cost and no appointment needed. Just be home, and we’ll handle the rest.

This blitz is all about making sure every family has access to working smoke alarms and the information that can make a life-saving difference. We want to put safety knowledge and equipment directly into our residents' hands.

We’re looking forward to being in your neighborhood, and we'll see you soon.
