🌅🗳️ Sunsetting partisan municipal elections in .

City Council gave initial approval to an ordinance to shift elections to a nonpartisan format in 2027, as mandated by state law. Under the new system, all candidates compete in a single nonpartisan primary, and the two with the most votes move forward. This would replace separate Republican and Democratic primaries.

📆 The election calendar would remain the same.
• Candidates can file to run between noon March 16 through noon March 30.
• If there are more than two candidates, a nonpartisan primary will be held on the second Tuesday in June.
• The top two vote-getters will advance to the general election in November.

The approach aims to reduce partisan influence and encourage broader voter participation.

🚨🚦🚒 Giving fire engines the GREEN light. Emergency Vehicle Preemption (EVP) technology is now installed inside every City traffic signal cabinet, paired with companion units onboard apparatus.

When an emergency vehicle approaches an intersection with its lights and sirens activated, the EVP device in the signal cabinet recognizes it and immediately transitions the light to green, clearing a path through traffic.

“It gives traffic somewhere to go,” says Fire Chief Brian Horton. “A green light allows cars to clear the intersection and pull to the right, so our trucks don't have to pull into oncoming traffic.”

💭 "The idea came in the wake of Falls Park," said John Nolan of Greenville History Tours. "I mean, before Falls Park, we didn't have tourism." Our beloved park, that delights residents and visitors, opened in 2004.

"I would put up an A-frame sign and have the tour times. If somebody showed up, I'd give them a tour. If no one showed up, I packed up and went home," Nolan said of the early years.

🇵🇪🇦🇷🇲🇽 Peru + Argentina + a Mexican twist = Mezcla Greenville. Mezcla, "mix" in Spanish combines the flavors chef and co-owner Gonzalo León grew up with and the influences of his travels.

"I think that Peruvian food is growing a lot around the world. I saw there was an opportunity here in to introduce our culture," said Leon, who lived in Argentina and learned a few things about a good steak and bottle of w**e.

Oh baby. What a reunion. 🫢🚨🍼 Two firefighters met the Kingrey family this week, including mom Anna and 3-month-old Cooper, who they helped deliver over summer.

Anna was in labor with her third child and knew she wouldn't make it to the hospital. So, her husband Bryan called 911. Greenville Police Department officers arrived first, followed shortly by GCFD’s Quick Response Vehicle (QRV), staffed by a certified EMT and paramedic.

With calm professionalism, clear instructions and compassionate care, Fire Specialist Daniel Pronk and Firefighter Dan Wilder supported Anna through the delivery that occurred in her front yard.

The Kingrey's returned to Station 1 this week to thank the firefighters and introduce them to the baby Cooper and his siblings. "We’re so thankful for these two,” Anna shared. “They entered a scary situation, but their professionalism and calm attitudes made the whole family trust in their abilities.”

❤️ For firefighters, every call is different, but this one is memorable. "Thank you guys so much. Usually, when we leave a call, we don’t know what happens after. To be able to meet him now and see that everyone is doing so well means a lot to us.”

"Mezcla in Spanish means a mix,” says chef and owner Gonzalo Leon, on the meaning behind the name of his fusion restaurant. The menu is a flavorful blend of three Latin cultures: 🇵🇪 Peru, 🇦🇷 Argentina, and 🇲🇽 Mexico.

Leon moved to in 2022 and brought a taste of home with him. A native of Peru, he's perfected Pervuian pesto pasta, and brings a light touch to his Ceviche. 🍷🥩 Leon also spent time in Argentina and promises w**e pairings to elevate a perfectly seared steak.

Tomorrow is National Opioid Awareness Day. "Fentanyl overdose does not discriminate," says Capt. Kirby Rhinehart, coordinator of the department's opioid response team.

Recently funded for a third year through a class action lawsuit filed by the SC Attorney General's Office, the program has hosted nearly 200 outreach events, distributed more than 600 Narcan kits and regularly responds to overdose-related 911 calls

Firefighters recently gathered with families for an education and remembrance event.
