Boiling Springs Fire District Community, fall is right around the corner. Cooler weather means more yard work, outdoor activities, school functions, and family gatherings. It can also mean more opportunities for exposure to stinging insects and foods that may trigger a severe allergic reaction.

Anaphylaxis can become life-threatening very quickly. Watch for signs such as:
• Difficulty breathing or wheezing
• Swelling of the lips, tongue, face, or throat
• Widespread hives or itching
• Dizziness, confusion, or fainting
• Vomiting, stomach cramps, or other sudden symptoms after exposure to a known allergen

If anaphylaxis is suspected and the person has a prescribed epinephrine auto-injector, use it immediately and call 9-1-1. Follow the instructions on the device and inject it into the outer thigh. Do not delay epinephrine while waiting to see if symptoms improve. A second dose may be needed if symptoms persist and another prescribed auto-injector is available.

If you or a family member has a known severe allergy, keep prescribed epinephrine accessible and make sure family members, caregivers, teachers, and others know where it is and how to use it.

Before fall activities get underway, take a few minutes to check your auto-injectors, review how to use them, and make sure they haven't expired.

Boiling Springs Fire District Community, school is back in session, which means more teen drivers are traveling to and from high school, driving to activities and jobs, and gaining experience behind the wheel during the school day.

According to NHTSA and the CDC, inexperience is one of the biggest risks for teen drivers. Distractions, speeding, passengers, drowsy driving, impairment, and not wearing a seat belt can increase that risk even further.

Parents and teen drivers, take a few minutes this week to review the basics:

• Buckle up on every trip, in every seat.
• Put the phone away before driving.
• Follow the speed limit and leave plenty of following distance.
• Limit distractions from friends and other passengers.
• Never drive impaired or ride with an impaired driver.
• Get plenty of supervised practice in different driving conditions.
• Parents, model the same safe behaviors you expect from your teen.

For everyone else on the road, remember that some of the young drivers you encounter may still be learning. Stay patient, leave room, and avoid aggressive driving.

A driver's license brings new independence, but also a lot of responsibility. Help our students start the school year with safe habits that can last a lifetime.

Boiling Springs Fire District Community, one simple habit before bed could help save your life during a fire: Close Before You Doze.

Research from UL's Fire Safety Research Institute (FSRI) has shown that a closed bedroom door can significantly slow the spread of smoke, heat, and toxic gases, giving you valuable extra time to escape or be rescued. In fire tests, closed rooms stayed dramatically cooler and had much lower levels of carbon monoxide than rooms with the door left open. Modern homes burn faster than ever, making every second count.

Make "Close Before You Doze" part of your nightly routine:
• Close bedroom doors before going to sleep.
• Make sure you have working smoke alarms inside and outside every sleeping area.
• Practice your family's home fire escape plan.
• If you escape a fire, close doors behind you whenever it is safe to do so to help slow the fire's spread.

It only takes a few seconds to close a door before bed, but those few seconds could make all the difference.

Boiling Springs Fire District Community, we've recently responded to serious crashes involving minors riding high-speed electric motorcycles and similar electric-powered bikes. These incidents have resulted in severe traumatic injuries and serve as an important reminder that these machines demand the same level of responsibility and attention as any other vehicle on the road.

Many electric-powered bikes sold online can reach speeds far greater than traditional bicycles. Some of these e-motorcycles can reach speeds of between 45-60 mph (and some go even faster). Parents should understand the capabilities of these devices before purchasing one and ensure younger riders are mature enough to operate them safely. Riders should always obey traffic laws, wear a properly fitted helmet, stay visible to motorists, and avoid reckless behaviors such as weaving through traffic, jumping curbs, wheelies, or entering roadways unexpectedly.

Take a few minutes this week to have a conversation with your family about safe riding habits. A little preparation and responsible decision-making can prevent a life-changing or deadly crash.

Boiling Springs Fire District Community, downed power lines are extremely dangerous and should always be treated as if they are live.

If you see a downed line:

• Stay at least 30 feet away
• Keep others away from the area
• Never drive over the line
• Do not touch trees, fences, vehicles, or anything else in contact with it
• Call 9-1-1 immediately to report the hazard

If a power line falls on your vehicle, stay inside, call for help, and wait for responders. Only exit if there is an immediate danger such as fire. If you must exit, jump clear without touching the vehicle and the ground at the same time.

Take a few minutes this week to review downed power line safety with your family.
