Squirrel Talk: 🐿
Squirrels like other wildlife have their offspring during the spring but they have 2 separate breeding times.
Litters can have 2 to 4 kits (baby squirrels) & in some odd instances, up to 8.
The first litter is typically around March but if it's a warmer winter can start as early as February. (Thankfully this doesn't happen often 😬)
Second litters can start as early as July but typically in August.
Squirrel momma's make a nest, actually called a drey, & can have more than one of these dreys built. Dreys are made from leaves, pines straw, & sticks.
Dreys are their home & protect the squirrels from predators & provide a warm shelter in the winter.
When we recieve calls about baby squirrels that have been found on the ground, we will typically ask the finder to try & reunite with mom. This is done by leaving kit near the tree or where an adult squirrel has been seen.
The baby squirrel or squirrels can be placed in a small container with an old tshirt or paper towels as well. We also advice that the finder play "baby squirrel" sounds on their phone. (These baby squirrel sounds can be found on YouTube).
Reuniting squirrels should be done during good weather & during daylight hours. Never leave pinkie squirrels (pink colored skin, no fur, eyes & ears are closed, recently born) or juvenile squirrels outside over night.
If a juvenile squirrel (fully furred, eyes open, can climb & move on its own) follows you or jumps onto to you, this squirrel needs help & you need to contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator.

*please do not attempt to feed, give water, or medications. The most important thing you can do is keep them warm & secure.
