🌧️ FLOOD WATCH – THURSDAY Aug 27th

Greenwich could see several rounds of showers and thunderstorms this afternoon and evening, generally between noon and 11:00 PM.

🌧️ Heavy Rain & Flooding
• Periods of heavy rainfall are possible, with peak rainfall rates approaching 2 inches per hour.
• Locally heavy downpours could cause urban, poor-drainage and low-lying flooding.
• Isolated flash flooding is possible, particularly where heavier rain occurs.

⛈️ Strong to Severe Storms
A few thunderstorms could become strong to severe. The primary threat is damaging wind gusts, which could bring down trees and power lines and cause scattered power outages.

📅 Timing: Noon–11:00 PM Thursday

Stay weather aware today and be prepared for rapidly changing conditions. Never drive through flooded roadways.

🚨 Greenwich CERT🚨 Now accepting applications for our Feb. 2027 class.

Greenwich CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) is a trained group of Greenwich residents who volunteer their time to help our community prepare for, respond to, and recover from emergencies and disasters.

CERT members receive training in areas such as emergency preparedness, disaster response, first aid, fire safety, search and rescue, sheltering, communications, and other skills that can help support our emergency responders and emergency management team during a major incident.

Most importantly, CERT is about neighbors helping neighbors. Whether assisting during a large-scale emergency, supporting community events, helping with preparedness outreach, or providing additional resources during a disaster, Greenwich CERT members are an important part of our community's preparedness efforts.

We are now accepting applications for our next CERT training class, beginning in February 2027.

The application and selection process includes:

🌧️ FLOOD WATCH & FLASH FLOOD THREAT – GREENWICH

A Flood Watch is in effect for Greenwich and Fairfield County from 2:00 PM today through 2:00 AM Friday.

Heavy showers and thunderstorms are expected this afternoon through the evening, with the greatest threat for flash flooding between 6:00 PM and midnight.

⚠️ What to Expect:
• 1.5–2.5 inches of rain possible, with locally higher amounts
• Rainfall rates of 2–2.5 inches per hour possible
• Flash flooding possible in low-lying areas, poor drainage areas, and urban locations
• Localized road flooding and transportation disruptions
• Some thunderstorms could become strong to severe, with damaging wind gusts possible
• An isolated tornado cannot be completely ruled out

🌊 Turn Around, Don't Drown!
Never drive through a flooded roadway. Water can rise quickly and may be deeper or moving faster than it appears.

Residents should monitor weather conditions, allow extra travel time this evening, and be prepared for rapidly changing conditions.

⚠️ WEATHER ALERT: Heat Advisory & Severe Storm Monitoring ⚠️

The National Weather Service is monitoring for the possibility of severe storms today. Temperatures are expected to be in the 90's today, but they expect temperatures to cool down as we approach the weekend. Please stay alert to today's weather as conditions could change quickly.

☀️ EXTREME HEAT CAUTION
• Peak Heat: Heat indices will reach the upper 90s today.
• Health Risk: There is an increased risk of heat-related illness, especially for
vulnerable populations. Check on neighbors and keep pets indoors.
• Outlook: Conditions will improve tomorrow, with a noticeable cool-down
arriving by the weekend.

⛈️ SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS (Late Afternoon/Evening)
• Timing: Showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop late this
afternoon and evening, primarily favoring the western half of town.
• Wind Threat: Isolated storms may produce damaging winds exceeding 60
mph. Secure loose outdoor furniture and be prepared for potential tree
damage and power outages.
🌊 LOCALIZED FLASH FLOOD POTENTIAL
• Risk Areas: Heavy downpours could lead to sudden flash flooding in urban,
low-lying, and poor-drainage areas.
• Waterways: Avoid low ground near quick-responding rivers, streams, and
creeks. Never drive through flooded roadways.

☀️ WEATHER & OUTAGE UPDATE:
Greenwich is under a heat advisory today through Monday. Peak heat indices will hit 90°F to 100°F between 11 AM and 6 PM.

17 homes are without power across 5 localized incidents:
📍 North Mianus Neighborhood: 3 active incidents
📍 Belle Haven / Byram Area: 2 active incidents.

If your home is without power, please call Eversource to ensure they are aware of the outage at your home.

All blocked roads from Friday nights storm have reopened as of 9:30pm last night.

Greenwich Emergency Management reminds all families to prepare a emergency kit to sustain being home for 5 to 7 days in the event of larger utility infrastructure damage, and/or blocked roads in the in the future. When Trees are down with wires due to a severe storm, it is the goal of Eversource to reopen those roads first before restoration. When we are impacted by these severe pop up summer storms, the utility companies may not have planned for additional resources to be in the area. It can take time to get their crews around to all the roads, in all the communities, to Make Safe and deenergize the wires and remove the trees and equipment in the roadway.

When we have a severe storm forecasted to hit the area in advance, many times the utility companies with activate their emergency plans, and resources from other states relocate to our area to assist with restoration.

Be Prepared: Maintain a rolling 7-day reserve of water (1 gallon per person, per day) and food, charge all backup power banks/flashlights, ensure your gutters are cleaned out, your sump pumps are working, and your generators have been serviced and are working correctly.

🚧 TRAFFIC & POWER RESTORATION UPDATE 🚧

Town and utility crews remain hard at work clearing debris and restoring power across Greenwich. Please see the latest status on road closures and outages below:

📍 PROSPECT DRIVE CLOSURE: We are aware of the ongoing closure on Prospect Drive. Our team has been actively working with Eversource representatives to secure the necessary resources to open this roadway.

Status: Additional utility crews are en route. We are being told that a specific crew has been assigned to Prospect Drive and will head directly to the area as soon as they finish an active job in Darien.

⚡ POWER OUTAGES & UTILITY STATUS: There are currently 915 customers without power in Greenwich, spread across 16 separate active incidents.

New Incident: A new outage in the Londonderry and Burning Tree Road area is currently impacting 487 customers.

Other Major Areas: The Bible Street area is being repaired and has over 150 customers still affected.

⚠️ THE PRIORITY FOR EVERSOURCE CREWS: remains on opening blocked roads to ensure public safety and emergency access. Restoration efforts will continue non-stop throughout the day.

⚠️ STORM UPDATE & WEATHER ALERT: GREENWICH ⚠️

Last night's storm impacted several Fairfield County communities. A big thank you to our town departments, tree crews, emergency services, dispatch center, and volunteer patrol and fire companies who worked through the night to clear debris, protect blocked roads, and assist with power restoration!

Work continues today as we expect another hot day and potential severe weather later this afternoon..

Current Situation:
☀️ WEATHER: High humidity and temperatures today will push heat indices into the upper 90s. Scattered severe thunderstorms are possible today, mainly after 2:00 PM and into tonight. Strongest storms may bring heavy rain, flash flooding, and damaging winds.
🚧 ROAD CLOSURES & INFRASTRUCTURE180 Bible Street: Remains closed.232 Byram Shore Road: Closed. A utility restoration crew is currently en route. 12 Prospect Drive remains closed. Additional Eversource crews are headed to Greenwich to assist. Opening blocked roads is the priority.
⚡ POWER OUTAGES & UTILITY STATUS:
Current Outages: Greenwich currently has 1,072 customers without power across 17 separate utility incidents. A new incident on Cat Rock Road impacts 675 customers, making up the majority of the town's outages, followed closely by the Bible Street area.

Restoration: Eversource crews worked through the night across Fairfield County, and municipal/utility teams will continue working throughout the day.

🚨 SAFETY REMINDERS: Treat all downed wires as live and dangerous. Stay far away and report them immediately. Do not drive through barricaded roads.

🚨 WEATHER & DAMAGE UPDATE: TOWN OF GREENWICH 🚨
A Greenwich Alert was sent to residents regarding the severe storm and potential flash flooding that quickly approached the area.

Emergency service crews are currently responding to numerous calls for downed wires and trees across town.

Current Situation: Outages: There are currently 1,474 reported power outages. We expect this number to increase throughout the evening.

Restoration: We are coordinating with Eversource, and crews will begin restoration work as soon as it is safe to do so. Wires in the road have to be "Made Safe" before any restoration begins. Please be patient as restoration will take some time. Many communities are experiencing severe weather.

🚨 SEVERE WEATHER ALERT: SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING 🚨
The National Weather Service has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Southern Fairfield County, including the Town of Greenwich, effective until 7:15 PM EDT tonight.
Current Situation: Hazards: 60 MPH wind gusts and penny-sized hail.
Impacts: Expect localized damage to trees and power lines, which may cause power outages.
Timeline: The storm line is moving east rapidly and is expected to impact our immediate area between 6:35 PM and 6:45 PM EDT.

Stay off the roads if possible during the peak of the storm. Treat all downed power lines as live and stay far away from them. Stay tuned to local forecast and emergency broadcasts for continuous updates
