Greenwood Lake Police Officers often respond to reports of injured wildlife. A Good Samaritan called in a turtle they witnessed get struck by a vehicle. Turns out that turtle is an endangered species in NYS. Deemed he could be saved he was turned over to a wildlife rehabber where he is expected to make a full recovery. That recovery could take a year or more as his shell has to heal. Feel free to head over to the original post and suggest a name for this guy. We appreciate those who work with animals and are available to assist us when we have a creature who needs help. This turtle in particular is a land dweller called a Wood Turtle.

Now it's time for the women in blue.

A big thank you to a Good Samaritan who knew to call the Greenwood Lake Police Department when they saw this turtle in the road after being hit by a car.

Sargent Leanne Gayler responded to the call.
Based on her extensive knowledge of local wildlife, she identified him as a Wood Turtle. Her quick identification and assessment that he could be saved made all the difference.

Sargent Gayler scooped him up, took him to the station and called us.

The Wood Turtle is a beautiful and endangered species with a limited range. The wild population is being depleted due to loss of habitat, being hit by cars, and poaching for the black market pet trade.

We're overjoyed to report his future looks bright thanks to the knowledge and compassion of Sargent Gayler.

We are honored to be a part of his rescue.

He will be a long term rehabilitation as shell repair to release can take up to a year or more.

We would like to also thank Turtle Rescue of the Hamptons for all of their advice, and support.

As this gentleman will be with us for a while, we're open to name suggestions.

Unfortunately, we have made the difficult decision to cancel our basketball tournament due to several teams backing out. At this point, we simply don’t have enough teams to put on the quality event that our players, families, and community deserve.

Patrol and School Safety Officers participated in reality based training today. Officers were run through scenarios lead by Sergeant Jason Dwyer.

Thank you to Weschester Medical for allowing us to utilize your building for training.

Thank you to our Dispatcher Robbie Foschini for being a great sport today. He did a great job playing our suspect in several of the scenarios.

We’ve had a few teams drop out, and we’re now in danger of having to cancel the tournament if we don’t get some more teams registered.
