“It was a real challenge,” Esperance shared.

Jenda Health Center needed at least 30 jerrycans of water every day, about 600 liters, to keep the facility running. Each jerrycan cost 300 Rwandan francs to transport, meaning the health center could spend up to 270,000 Rwandan francs, or about $185, in a single month during long periods without water. This situation placed a financial burden on the facility and a physical strain on staff.

But that changed when Water For People, in partnership with Nyamagabe District, rehabilitated the Kariba-Jenda-Masizi Water Supply System.

The upgraded 7.5-kilometer (4.6-mile) network now brings reliable water to more than 2,000 people, including around 100 people who visit Jenda Health Center each day. Most importantly for Esperance and her team, water now reaches the health facility directly.

“Now the water is always there,” Esperance said. “We no longer have to carry that burden of choosing between cleaning and caring for patients.”

“Imagine having to choose between water to clean the facility and water to give to inpatients to keep them safe. That was our daily reality,” said Esperance Baziyaka, a cleaner at Jenda Health Center in Nyamagabe District, Rwanda.

When a health center lacks reliable clean water, safe sanitation, and proper handwashing facilities, both patients and medical providers face a greater risk of spreading disease.

For more than five years, Esperance has helped keep Jenda Health Center clean and safe for patients. But for much of that time, her work was difficult because the facility lacked reliable water. Today, water is available for the daily work that keeps a health center safe: cleaning rooms, washing hands, maintaining toilets, and caring for patients with dignity.

Good health starts with safe water.

Around the world, about 2 billion people depend on healthcare facilities that lack access to basic water services. Water is a human right. In health clinics, it makes it possible to clean equipment, prevent infections, support safe childbirth, and provide patients with the care and dignity every human deserves.

When water is out of reach, preventable diseases spread more easily, and women face difficulties during childbirth. 8% of maternal deaths (and up to 15% in lower- and middle- income countries) can be directly linked to unhygienic conditions during labor and birth and poor post-natal hygiene.

As the Africa Water & Sanitation Systems Leadership Symposium comes to a close in Kigali, one message is clear: achieving lasting water and sanitation services requires strong systems, shared leadership, and collective action.

Over the past few days, Water For People has joined WASH leaders from across Africa to share experiences, challenge ideas, and contribute to important conversations on climate resilience, public financial management, decentralized services, market-based sanitation, effective regulation, results-based financing, and systems transformation.

From our speakers and panelists to the many conversations at our exhibition booth, we’ve been encouraged by the commitment across the sector to move from dialogue to action.

A big thank you to everyone who joined our sessions, stopped by our booth, exchanged ideas with our teams, and contributed to these important conversations.

The symposium may be ending, but the work continues. We leave Kigali energized by the connections made, lessons shared, and our collective ambition to build stronger WASH systems that deliver lasting services for everyone.

When health workers can't wash their hands, they cannot do their job right. Jeniva tells how unreliable water access affects the daily lives of patients and health providers alike at the Idodoma Health Center.

"It reached a point where even doctors lacked water to wash their hands, so we had to go collect it and carry it here," recalls Jeniva. "If we can get access to reliable water, it will help us provide services at the Health Center. It will also be a huge help to pregnant women who are giving birth."

Water For People's mission is clear: reaching everyone with safe water and sanitation, forever - including health clinics.

Clean water isn't charity. It's a human right. Safe water, sanitation, and hygiene are essential at nearly every point in our lives. In health clinics, they make it possible to clean equipment, prevent infections, support safe childbirth, and provide patients with the care and dignity they deserve.

When these basics are out of reach, preventable diseases spread more easily. Health workers face greater challenges and risks providing safe care. At Water For People, we aim to reach every health clinic with safe water and sanitation forever, so communities can live healthy lives and thrive.
