A Detective conducts private investigations, such as obtaining confidential information, seeking missing persons and investigation crimes and thefts. Locates and obtains statements from witnesses and individuals being investigated, examines scene of crime, when assigned to criminal cases, to obtain clues. Writes report of investigations for use by agency conducting investigations. This position is classified as non-exempt under the Fair Labor Standard Act.
EXAMPLES OF WORK
The following examples are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed in positions allocated to this classification. The absence of specific statements of duties does not exclude those tasks from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment of the position.
• Examines scene of crime, when assigned to criminal cases, to obtain clues.
• Stays informed of all regulations, policies, and laws concerning crime investigation.
• Writes reports of investigations with accuracy, completeness and legibility for use by agency conduction investigations.
• Locates and obtain statements from witnesses and individuals being investigated.
• Takes and develops photographs for use in investigation.
• Contacts law enforcement agencies, employers and other sources to obtain information concerning individuals under investigation.
• May operate typewriters, cameras and fingerprinting equipment.
QUALIFICATIONS
• Must have a least three (3) years’ experience in law enforcement.
• Considerable knowledge of the laws policies, practices, and procedures concerning the operation of the Police Department in the municipality where employed.
• Considerable knowledge of the techniques of apprehending criminals or law violators and method of conducting investigations.
• Ability to exercise good judgment in evaluating situations and making decisions, to express ideas clearly and concisely and to deal effectively with the public.
• Must possess a Valid Mississippi Driver’s License.
