The Greenwood Fire Department extends its deepest condolences to the family, friends, and brothers and sisters of Sergeant Nathaniel Thomas.

Sergeant Thomas dedicated his life to serving others through both his commitment as a firefighter with the Indianapolis Fire Department and his honorable service in the Indiana Army National Guard. His selfless devotion to protecting his community and his country exemplified the highest ideals of public service.

Many members of the Greenwood Fire Department have the privilege of serving alongside Sergeant Thomas in the Indiana Army National Guard. They knew him as a trusted teammate, leader, and friend whose character, professionalism, and unwavering commitment left a lasting impact on all who served with him.

Today, we mourn the loss of a dedicated firefighter, a proud soldier, and a respected member of our extended public safety family. We are grateful for his service, inspired by his example, and honored to have known him.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones, his Indianapolis Fire Department family, his fellow Guardsmen, and all those whose lives were touched by his kindness and service.

Rest easy, Sergeant Thomas. Your watch is ended, but your legacy of service and sacrifice will never be forgotten.

📣🔥 Please join us in welcoming 2026-1 Recruit Jacob Perkins to the Greenwood Fire Department.

Jacob is a Purdue University graduate currently serving in the Indiana Air National Guard and formerly a high school English teacher. Jacob enjoys hunting, reading, traveling (especially exploring our National Parks), working out, and is currently pursuing his private pilot’s license for fun. He’s also excited to be getting married this summer.

As he looks ahead, Jacob’s goal is to focus on training and become as proficient as possible during and after the academy.

🚗🚧🪝 This week starts Vehicle Extrication Operations and Technician for both the 26-1 Recruit Class and members from the Greenwood Fire Department.

Education never stops. Training together strengthens both individual skill sets and the team as a whole, encouraging collaboration and accountability, building confidence through collective growth. Success and safety are shared responsibilities.
