November 27, 1951
Private Loater Loyd McKinney of Company F, 118th Infantry Regiment, 30th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, dies in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
Accompanying two comrades, Private McKinney attacked with hand grenades an enemy machine-gun stronghold, containing at least 40 Germans and four machine guns, and forced the enemy to surrender.
Private McKinney was presented the Distinguished Service Cross on July 9, 1919 for extraordinary heroism in action while serving near Montbrehain, France, October 8, 1918 when he was just 17 years old.
