ON THIS DATE, 21 YEARS AGO: Hurricane Katrina made landfall neath Louisiana/Mississippi border. The remnants would pass west of the mountains on 30 August and produce strong wind gusts across the mountains of North Carolina, including a brief EF1 tornado in Macon County, North Carolina.

A hot and humid pattern is likely to return by Tuesday, with heat index values east of the mountains expected to climb into the upper 90s or triple digits each afternoon from Tuesday through Friday. Limit strenuous outdoor activity and stay hydrated!

ON THIS DATE, 38 YEARS AGO: A brief tornado (rated F1) touched down in Statesville, North Carolina, as the remnants of Tropical Storm Chris moved northward across the western Piedmont of the Carolinas.
