EXTENSION DEADLINES ARE COMING UP!

We are officially getting into the final stretch for anyone who filed an extension for their 2025 taxes.

If you filed an extension earlier this year, here are the dates you need to know:

September 15, 2026 Partnerships & S Corporations

October 15, 2026 Individual tax returns

For my business owners, that September 15th deadline is especially important. Even though partnerships and S Corporations generally don’t pay federal income tax at the entity level, there can still be significant penalties for filing the return late.

Those penalties can be assessed per partner or shareholder, per month the return is late. So if you have multiple owners and let a return sit unfiled for several months, those penalties can add up very quickly.

I’ve seen business owners assume that because their business doesn’t owe federal income tax, there isn’t a penalty for filing the return late. Unfortunately, that’s not how it works. You still need to file the return on time.

And remember, an extension gave you more time to file, not more time to pay. If you personally owed taxes, those taxes were still due back in April. The longer we wait, the more penalties and interest can continue to add up.

If you haven’t gotten your documents to your tax professional yet, now is the time!

Please don’t wait until September 14th or October 14th. We love you, but there are only so many hours in the day!

At Benson Accounting & Tax Solutions, we’re already working through our extended returns and helping clients get everything wrapped up.

If you still need to file your 2025 taxes, reach out sooner rather than later. Whether you’re an individual, partnership, or S Corporation, we can help you get across the finish line.

And if your accounting isn’t done yet… definitely don’t wait. That’s usually the part that takes the most time!

We are excited to share some great news!

Our employee, Veronika, has officially passed Part 1 of the IRS Enrolled Agent (EA) examination on her first attempt!

The Enrolled Agent credential is the highest credential awarded by the IRS and requires passing a rigorous three-part examination covering individual taxation, business taxation, and taxpayer representation before the IRS. Passing Part 1 on the first try is a significant accomplishment and reflects the hard work, dedication, and commitment she has shown to her profession.

At Benson Accounting & Tax Solutions, we are committed to investing in our team through continuing education so we can provide the highest level of service to our clients. We are proud to support Veronika as she continues working toward earning her Enrolled Agent designation.

Please join us in congratulating our employee, Veronika, on this outstanding achievement. We can’t wait to celebrate when she earns all three parts and officially becomes an Enrolled Agent!

IRS Increases Standard Mileage Rates Effective July 1, 2026

The IRS has announced an increase to the standard mileage rates for expenses incurred on or after July 1, 2026.

New mileage rates:

* Business: 76¢ per mile (up from 72.5¢)
* Medical & Moving: 23.5¢ per mile (up from 20.5¢)
* Charitable: Remains at 14¢ per mile (set by law)

What does this mean for business owners?

If you deduct business mileage using the IRS standard mileage rate, you’ll need to keep track of your miles using two different rates for 2026:

* January 1 – June 30: 72.5¢ per mile
* July 1 – December 31: 76¢ per mile

This means it’s important that your mileage log clearly distinguishes miles driven before and after July 1. If you use a mileage tracking app, make sure it can separate your mileage by date so the correct rate is applied.

If you have questions about how this affects your business or need help keeping accurate mileage records, we’re happy to help.

The IRS announced a significant change today that could help many taxpayers avoid penalties.

Beginning with eligible 2025 tax returns and 2026 quarterly returns, the IRS is introducing a new program called Automatic Exemption from Penalty (AEP). If you have a good history of filing your tax returns and paying your taxes on time, the IRS may automatically remove certain penalties without you having to request relief.

This new program will gradually replace the current First Time Abate (FTA) process that many tax professionals have used for years.

For most taxpayers, eligibility is based on having filed and paid on time during the previous three years (or 12 consecutive quarters for quarterly filers). If you qualify, the IRS will automatically apply the relief and send you a notice confirming it.

It’s important to remember that this only applies to certain penalties. Any tax owed and any applicable interest will still need to be paid.

If you receive an IRS notice assessing penalties, don’t assume there aren’t options available. Even if you don’t qualify for this new automatic relief, you may still qualify for penalty relief based on reasonable cause.

As always, if you receive a letter from the IRS and aren’t sure what it means or whether you qualify for relief, we’re happy to review it with you.

We are nearly 6 months into the year already… which means now is the perfect time to ask yourself:

“Do I actually know how my business is doing financially?”

You might need bookkeeping/accounting help if:

• You’re behind on reconciling bank accounts
• You don’t know if your business is actually profitable
• Tax season felt stressful or disorganized
• You mix personal and business expenses
• Your QuickBooks isn’t up to date
• You’re unsure how much to set aside for taxes
• You’ve grown and can no longer keep up with the books yourself
• You wait until tax time to look at your numbers
• Your Profit & Loss or Balance Sheet doesn’t make sense to you
• Payroll, sales tax, or contractor payments are becoming overwhelming

Good accounting is more than just “doing taxes.” It helps you understand your business, make informed decisions, and avoid costly surprises.

At Benson Accounting & Tax Solutions, we help business owners stay organized year-round with bookkeeping, payroll, tax planning, QuickBooks support, and business consulting.

Whether you need monthly bookkeeping or help cleaning up messy books, we’d be happy to talk.
