We’re over a week into the 2026 Click It or Ticket national initiative to promote seat belt safety. Our goal is not just enforcement; it’s preventing serious injuries and saving lives.

Remember: buckle up, every seat, every time!

Shortly before 5:30 P.M., our officers and Gresham Fire responded to a report of a single-vehicle crash near NE 181st Ave and NE Couch St. The involved vehicle left the roadway, struck a utility pole, and came to rest against a nearby apartment building. The driver was ejected from the vehicle. They were transported to a local hospital in critical condition.

The apartment building suffered minor, non-structural damage. Roads and traffic lights in the area were impacted for several hours while utility crews worked to repair the utility pole and damaged wires. The investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing.

This crash is a reminder of the importance of wearing a seatbelt. Research has shown proper seatbelt use virtually eliminates the chance of being ejected from a vehicle, even during a roll-over crash. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates that using lap and shoulder seat belts reduces the risk of front seat passenger car deaths by 45%, and moderate to critical injuries by 50%. The results are even more significant for the occupants of light trucks.

A seatbelt takes just seconds to put on, but it can save a lifetime of heartache.

Through May 31, the Gresham Police department is participating in a national seatbelt campaign with one simple reminder: buckle up every trip, every time.

⚠️ Reminder About Off-Road Electric Motorcycles ⚠️

On Sunday, May 17, while handling an unrelated call, one of our officers noticed a teenager riding wheelies on an off-road electric motorcycle. After clearing the original call, the officer contacted the rider and learned the teen was not old enough to have a driver’s license or motorcycle endorsement.

We want riders and parents to know that many of these electric motorcycles are designed for off-road use only. They are not permitted on public streets, sidewalks, or in city parks unless they meet Oregon’s requirements for street-legal motorcycles.

Some manufacturers market certain models as “street legal,” but that requires the motorcycle to:
• Pass a DMV safety inspection
• Have valid insurance
• Be properly registered
• Be operated by a licensed rider with a motorcycle endorsement wearing a helmet

In this case, the youth was given a warning and an opportunity to get the motorcycle home rather than have it towed.

E-bikes and electric motorcycles can be a lot of fun, but riders and parents share a responsibility to understand the rules and operate them safely and legally.
