Congratulations to Audrey, our newest Eagle Scout candidate from Troop 5586! Audrey is also the last of our founding girls to achieve Eagle from the original group that started Troop 5586 back in February 2019.

Hello 586/5586 Community! As many of you know the girls of 5586 have the FABULOUS opportunity to go to SeaBase in August 2025. Amongst the many fundraisers they are working on, the troop is collecting bottles/cans for recycling to help pay some of the group costs (hotel/cab fares). In addition, the girls will be doing service for Every Child Counts, a school for children with Special Needs in Marsh Harbour, Abaco, Bahamas.

Today was Danny's eagle project. He installed a sign about invasive species at Lewis and Clark State Park. Tomorrow after the concrete sets a boot brush will be installed. Great job Danny.

A big shout out and thank you to all of the adults and scouts who helped with the Portland Marathon today. Over 2500 marathoners were able to participate because of your help. Thank You!!!

Even at my age I still have "well, that's the first time that has happened" moments. Last night as I was getting ready to take an advancement photo, a pop up telling me I was getting a text message appeared on my screen and blocked my view of the picture. By the time I got the screen cleared, the moment had passed. Fortunately, Ashley was also taking a photo and she sent this pic to me. Thank You for backing me up Ashley!

Anyway, let's all congratulate Thacher as he takes another step toward Eagle by earning his Tenderfoot rank last night. Good job Thacher!

Portland Marathon 10.6.2024
Hello Everyone,

The Portland Marathon is happening Sunday, October 6th, 2024. The marathon directors are hoping that we can provide a team and volunteer again as we have in the past. At this time we do not know where our assigned location along the trail will be. More info on that as it gets closer.

We are need of 18 scouts and/or adults to fill the stations that have been assigned to us. Scouts 14 or older can work a station by themselves. Scouts under the age of 14 will need to be accompanied by an adult.

The Portland Marathon has paid (~$10/person) us in the past for volunteering and working the race. If payment is received by the troop from Portland Marathon, all funds will be deposited into the youth's scout account. That includes parents volunteer hours as well.

We will be volunteering as Course Marshals.
As course marshals they help keep the Marathon course safe! They make sure the small barricades are on the road, they should be placed there already, but if not, you will set them up. The course marshals will cheer on runners as they pass and stand near the barricades so outside pedestrians and traffic understand the road is closed. They should know that based on the signs and barricade, but the course marshal position is an added level to that.

We will be in a neighborhood where the locals are very familiar with the process, so there should not be very much interaction with the drivers. Adult leaders who do not have a scout in the program can earn money for the troop summer camp scholarship fund. Parents manning a station by themselves will be earning money for their scout's account.

Once Jim Denman turn in our group name and list of volunteer then we will be assigned a location along the route. We will not know more of our exact stops and crossroads until a couple days before the race.

We have had a lot of fun with this in years past, not only with fellow scouts but the neighborhood gets involved as well.

Another meeting and, of course, rank advancement. This time it is William earning Tenderfoot rank. I thought I was going to have a relaxing evening until this guy showed up asking for a Board of Review. No problem, I grabbed three adults from the crowd and voila the BOR happened and he passed with flying colors (where did that phrase originate?). Anyway, let's congratulate William for taking another step toward Eagle. Nice job Scout.
