*****ATTN PLAQUEMINES PARISH LOUISIANA FIREFIGHTERS*****

Capt. Coleman is currently accepting requests to participate in this class. Didactic consists of eLearning that can be done while you're on duty. The practical skills consists scenarios and several techniques that increase safety, efficiency and speed of extrication.

This course is applicable to canals of all widths, depths, shears and velocities. Information is also invaluable for responding to estuaries, bayous, small rivers, the base of low head dams and other bodies of water.

The course provides critical information for rescues involving vehicles that are still buoyant when you arrive, vehicles that are settled with the cab above the waterline in moving and static water, vehicles with cabs that are settled shallow below the surface as well as proper measures to be taken when all you have are context clues or witnesses with no vehicle visible. Further training of a more technical nature meets a Mission Specific Distinctive Specialty need using SCUBA in a Quick-Rescue Diver course that has a path to full certification backed by the Public Safety Division or the International Diving Educators Association (Est 1952).

All students conduct zero visibility vehicle and occupant assessments, squaring and extrication, proper window and protected door searches, tendering, cut seat belts, manipulate infant car seats and much more. With a total of 11 scenarios including mass casualty using live and weighted manikins you will be familiar with most scenarios you may face.

Additionally, many of you are aware of the light aerial transportation that frequents your airspace including sea planes, off-shore and medical transport helicopters. We have teamed up with some of those same operators to provide the most up to date information as to what to expect should you have to respond to an aquatic incident involving those aircraft. We also include other light transportation including hot air and gas balloons, ultra-light aircraft and events that may involve vehicle or pedestrian beam bridge collapse.

Participants will have access to all of our training props including PFDs, helmets, rescue swimmer training vests, masks, snorkels and of course the modified Ford Ranger we will sink in a local waterway.

Although this is an open class to any first responder, Plaquemines Parish firefighters will have priority and we only allow a max of 16 people. If we need to offer multiple classes, we are prepared to do so and if your department would like to host a class, please give me a shout at 504-382-1097 at [email protected]

This is an incredibly sad and unfortunate event. But it’s critical that we learn from other’s experiences so that we don’t become the bad experience others learn from.

Buoyant vehicle access and rescue is one of the topics covered in our Canal Rescue and In-Water Vehicle Extrication course.

Learn about it at diveandrescue.org It’s on the front page. Easy to find.

Let us bring our mission specific Ford Ranger to you. We’ll sink it in one of your waterways*. We cover Vehicle Settled w Cab Showing, Vehicle Settled Cab Shallow below the Surface and No Vehicle Seen, but context clues or witnesses present.

Call or text for information 504-382-1097

* while not every waterway requires hazmat response, it’s always a consideration. One we also take into consideration for training locations.
