Now is the time to be finalizing your weather safety plans! ✅

Do you/your family know where your safe place is?
Do you have ways to receive warning information?
Have you put together a weather safety kit with any medications, things for your pets, a flashlight etc.?

Severe weather can happen at any time and you don't want to be caught off guard. It's also a great idea to follow your local emergency officials such as county emergency management. Be weather ready!

A frontal system is expected to pass through our area this afternoon and evening, followed by another one in the morning. Due to the rapid movement of this system, storms may develop with limited warning time. Therefore, please ensure that all necessary weather alert systems are activated and remain vigilant. It is essential to stay weather aware.

Born on August 29, 1945, in Griffin, Georgia, Wyomia Tyus grew up in a world that tried to limit her—but she ran right past those limits. A proud graduate of Fairmont High School, Tyus was shaped by a school where teachers taught with passion and believed in the brilliance of every student.
She carried those values with her to Tennessee State University, where she trained under the legendary Coach Ed Temple as part of the iconic Tigerbelles. Needless to say, she soared.

During the 1968 Olympics, Tyus wore black shorts in silent protest against racial injustice, aligning herself with the Olympic Project for Human Rights. Her gesture stood alongside the raised fists of Tommie Smith and John Carlos, making her a quiet but powerful voice for equality.
She did not need a podium to speak—her speed, her grace, and her courage said it all.

Wyomia Tyus did not stop at medals. She became a founding member of the Women’s Sports Foundation, advocating for equity in athletics. She was inducted into the U.S. Track & Field Hall of Fame, and in her hometown of Griffin, she was honored with the creation of Wyomia Tyus Olympic Park.
In 1984, she carried the Olympic flag during the Los Angeles Games—a symbol of her enduring legacy and global respect.

Wyomia Tyus is a trailblazer, a role model, and a daughter of Griffin whose story continues to inspire generations. Her journey from the halls of Fairmont High to the heights of Olympic glory is a testament to what happens when talent meets tenacity—and when a community believes in its children.
