Today, on National Peace Officers Memorial Day, we honor the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to their communities. This day serves as a solemn reminder of the sacrifice, courage, and dedication shown by law enforcement officers across our nation.

Established in 1962 by President John F. Kennedy and observed each year on May 15 during National Police Week, this occasion recognizes those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

Today, we especially remember Griffith Police Department Lieutenant Texas O. Minter. Lt. Minter lost his life while commuting to work when his patrol vehicle slid on icy roads and was struck by a train. During his seven years of service, he demonstrated steadfast dedication, professionalism, and commitment to protecting others.

As we remember, Lt. Minter and all fallen officers, we also extend our deepest appreciation to the men and women who continue to serve with honor, integrity, and courage each day to keep our communities safe.

Griffith Police Arrest Burglary Suspect

Griffith, IN — Griffith officers arrested Ronald Hamilton Jr after an investigation into a commercial burglary reported on May 5, 2026, at a radio transmitter facility in Griffith, Indiana.

Officers initially responded to an early-morning alarm and discovered signs of forced entry, along with evidence that property had been removed from the site. A male suspect was observed fleeing the area on foot and was not immediately apprehended despite an extensive search.

Subsequent review of CCTV footage revealed a male subject entering the facility, removing wiring, damaging equipment, and exiting through a breach in the perimeter fence. During the incident, several items associated with the burglary were left at the scene, including trace evidence that was later recovered and documented by detectives and proved significant to the investigation.

Further investigation identified Ronald Hamilton Jr. as the individual depicted in the surveillance footage. Additional information obtained independently corroborated key details consistent with the suspect’s actions, including his flight from police and the circumstances surrounding the offense.

Griffith patrol officers conducted surveillance that led to the identification, location, and detention of Hamilton. At the time of his detention, his appearance and clothing were consistent with those of the individual shown in the CCTV footage.

This case was forwarded to the Lake County Prosecutor’s Office for formal prosecution. Hamilton has been charged with:

• Burglary (Level 5 Felony)
• Theft (Class A Misdemeanor)
• Criminal Mischief (Class A Misdemeanor)
• Criminal Trespass (Class A Misdemeanor)

He is currently being held at the Lake County Jail on a bond of $35,000 / $3,500.

All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

NOTICE REGARDING CENTRAL PARK

Under Town Ordinance 2026-2, e-bikes, e-scooters, and bicycles are no longer permitted to be ridden inside Central Park or on the adjacent sidewalks.

We understand many residents and visitors enjoy riding to the park, and you are still welcome to do so. Upon arrival, please dismount and walk your device to a proper parking location before entering the park area.

This ordinance was put in place after several close calls involving juveniles riding these devices in crowded areas of the park. Our goal is to help provide a safe environment for everyone enjoying Central Park, especially families, children, and pedestrians.

Parents, please take a few moments to talk with your children about safe and responsible riding practices. These devices can travel at high speeds and must be operated safely and respectfully around others.

The goal of the Griffith Police Department is education and safe operation. We do not want to issue citations, and we are asking for everyone’s cooperation to help keep our park safe for all citizens and visitors.
