The National Weather Service has issued a Fire Weather Watch for our area due to gusty winds and low humidity, which can greatly increase the risk of fires starting and spreading quickly.

🗓 Effective: Friday, February 26, 2026
⏰ Until: 6:00 PM CST Friday, February 27, 2026
📍 Affected Area: Portions of west-central Illinois including Pike County.

🚫 What This Means:
• Conditions could become favorable for rapid fire growth.
• Outdoor burning and open flame activities are strongly discouraged while this watch is in effect.

🔥 Please help keep our community safe:
✔ Avoid outdoor burning or recreational fires.
✔ Don’t discard ci******es or embers where they could ignite dry grass or debris.
✔ Stay alert and report any smoke or fire immediately by calling 911.

It has been very dry in our area, and conditions are right for fires to spread quickly. Please be extra aware of your surroundings and the wind when you’re outside.

🔥 Avoid burning unless it is absolutely necessary.

🌬️ Even a small spark can become dangerous in these conditions.

👀 Keep a close eye on any outdoor equipment, smoking materials, or activities that could cause fire.

🍂🔥 Fall Fire Safety Reminder from Griggsville Fire Department

As the weather cools and fall sets in, here are a few important safety tips to help keep you and your family safe:

1️⃣ Check Your Heating Equipment – Have your furnace, fireplace, and chimneys inspected and cleaned before first use.
2️⃣ Space Heater Safety – Keep them at least 3 feet away from anything that can burn, and never leave them running unattended.
3️⃣ Change Smoke & CO Detector Batteries – A good rule of thumb is to replace batteries when you change your clocks this fall.
4️⃣ Practice Safe Leaf Disposal – Never burn leaves near your home or other structures. Use local disposal options instead.
5️⃣ Outdoor Fire Safety – If you enjoy fire pits, keep water or an extinguisher nearby and make sure fires are fully out before leaving them.

📚 School is back in session starting TODAY! 📚

Please remember to:

🚸 Watch for children walking or biking to school.

🏫 Slow down in school zones — obey posted speed limits.

🚗 Be patient with young drivers who are just starting their daily school commute.

🛑 Stop for school buses when red lights are flashing — it’s the law and it keeps our kids safe.

Let’s work together to make sure every student gets to and from school safely. Thank you for helping keep Griggsville’s kids safe this school year!

🚒🌸 Spring Safety Tip from Griggsville Fire Department 🌸🚒

As the weather warms up and you tackle spring cleaning, don’t forget to check your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms!

✅ Replace batteries if it’s been over 6 months
✅ Test each alarm to make sure it’s working properly
✅ Make sure you have alarms on every level of your home

A few minutes now could save lives later.

Reminder: Current conditions are very dry and our area is in a “Red” condition for open burning. The forecast for projected windy Conditions the next three days and warmer than normal conditions will only make burning more hazardous. Please make every attempt to refrain from burning.

Due to the nice weather, many people are eager to start their yard cleanup. However, a fire weather watch is currently in place, meaning that any outdoor burnings could get out of hand quickly. please wait until the watch is over before burning any leaves or grass. The watch is in effect through Monday night.
