The local County Party picnic is taking place tomorrow (Sunday Apr. 24th) at 5pm in Central Park. It will be attended by Democratic candidates for federal and state offices, including:

Gubernatorial candidate Deidre DeJear

US Senate candidates Michael Franken, Abby Finkenauer, & Glenn Hurst

US House candidate Liz Mathis

Secretary of Agriculture candidate John Norwood

State legislative candidates Sarah Smith & Sam Cox

County supervisor candidates Jason Roudabush & Paul Pohlson

This is a great opportunity to connect with community members if you are an activist, as well as get to know the candidates on your ballot.

Like many of you, these cold, wintery days during an even numbered year remind us of one thing...caucuses! That's right, even though it is not a presidential year, the Democratic Party is holding caucuses. These caucuses are used to determine the party platform in the coming two years, and serve as a great opportunity to make your voice heard in the party.

When: Feb 7th, 7pm

Where: DRAKE LIBRARY (930 Park Street)

Other Notes: Please remember to be respectful, as this is a community space. Voter registration forms will be provided on-site and masks will be required.

Grinnell College awarded Representative Tom Cole '71 (R-OK) an honorary Doctor of Laws degree at Commencement in 2016.

Upon acceptance, he told students that in a leader, they should look for "an institutionalist, someone who believes in the institutions of the country, who believes in fair play, who believes in open elections, who believes in the public process, and who understands something about the institutions that they're going to try and lead."

He also advised choosing "a traditionalist. Not a traditionalist in the sense of traditional values, but somebody who understands the traditional values of the American people, which again is openness, fair play, free elections, full debate, popular decision."

Last night, Representative Cole desecrated the very public process he claims to value by voting against the certification of Electoral College votes.

Grinnell College President Anne Harris wrote in a January 6 email to students, "I also feel more strongly than ever that the work of Grinnell College is the work of democracy."

If Grinnell College wants to hold true to its proclaimed values, then leadership should rescind Tom Cole's honorary degree.

We have 5 days until the election and, as the Republicans have made painfully clear, the only way protect our democracy is to elect a new president and congress.

With that in mind, we are partnering with the Iowa Democratic Party and participating in their Flip the Senate event, led by our own Jacob Cowan '23! Every day at 4pm until the election (except Friday), Grinnell students will be phone banking to win back the White House and Congress. Here is the link to sign up:

Fall Break Phone Bank!

According to FiveThirtyEight, Theresa Greenfield has a 56% chance of beating Joni Ernst. Joe Biden has 49% chance of winning Iowa. Every vote matters. Every call matters.

Right now, Iowans can vote — early and absentee. Can we count on you to do you part to turn Iowa — and the country — blue? Your fellow Grinnellians are calling voters every day through Election Day at 1pm CT. We’ll say hi on Zoom, receive a quick training, and use the IDP’s awesome dialing technology; you don’t even need a phone!

Congrats those who made it through the first term! Now that many of us have time, we in the campus dems are partnering with Coe College to do a group phonebank! This is how we win the election. Also, in the spirit of friendly competition, it would be fantastic to have more Grinnell students at the event than Coe students (hehehe).
