Our firefighters practice the skills and teamwork they need as much as they can in controlled environments, so they're ready when it matters.

Sunday morning, Grinnell Fire Department and other area firefighters spent time in the Fire Service Training Bureau's controlled fire simulation trailer. The trailer mimics the conditions of a house fire, giving firefighters a chance to get hands-on experience going through the steps of an active fire: checking gear, getting in, finding the fire, working through smoke and heat to put it out, and doing it all over again when the fire decides it isn't quite done.

A portion of Broad Street between 2nd and 3rd Avenues, in front of the new water treatment plant, will be closed for a few hours today (September 2nd) while crews position the generator for the new plant.

In observance of the Labor Day holiday on Monday, September 7th, City offices will be closed and there will be no trash collection. Trash normally picked up on Mondays will be collected on Tuesday, September 8th.

Last week, the Grinnell Fire Department put their water rescue skills to the test at the Grinnell Mutual Family Aquatic Center. Firefighters practiced water rescue techniques using a variety of equipment, including wetsuits, rescue slings, rescue sled, and afire hose filled with compressed air.

The hands-on training gave them a chance to practice how to safely approach and rescue a person in the water, under a variety of conditions, and become familiar with the equipment they may use during an emergency.

Special thanks to the Grinnell Parks and Recreation lifeguards for sticking around for the exercise. We're glad *they* didn't have to get any hands-on training!

Several streets will be closed Thursday, August 27, for the Grinnell Lions Club Ag Appreciation Day:
• 3rd Avenue will be closed between Park and Broad Streets
• Park Street will be closed between 3rd and 4th Avenues
• 4th Avenue from Park Street east to the alley and Park Street west to the alley

Activities in Central Park will take place from 3-7 pm, with the tractor parade starting at 6:35 pm.
