At around 4:45pm on 6/24/26 a structure fire with visible flames was reported at 58708 Yankton Road. Thick black smoke was visible for miles around. When Griswold Fire & Rescue crews arrived, an approximately 80-by-80 foot steel-framed auto shop was found to be fully involved in flames and smoke, along with numerous burning vehicles outside the building. Explosions were coming from several directions during the course of the fire.

Surrounding crews were requested and assisted in battling the flames and heat. No injuries or cases of heat exhaustion were reported. The cause of the fire remains undetermined at this point in time.

Crews were on the scene until about 8:30pm. The shop was deemed a total loss. A nearby residence was not affected by the heat and flames.

Departments providing mutual aid included: Cumberland Fire, Elliott Fire, Villisca Fire, Grant Fire, Massena Fire, Stanton Fire, Red Oak Fire, Lewis Fire, Cass EMS & Cass County Emergency Management.

Our department is extremely thankful for all of the help received on scene!

This month firefighters worked on improvement of basic firefighting skills for one of our monthly trainings. Focus areas included: ladders and the ventilation ladder package, victim “dirty drags”, and firefighter survival skills.🧑🏻‍🚒
