GI residents know GI Roads, trails, and paths better than anyone. Grosse Ile Walks and Bikes is an informal civic booster association. The page may include members of Grosse Ile Township government and commissions, but it is in no way an official township page.

Making pedestrian crossing safer for everyone! Have you seen the new cross walk on Grosse Ile Patkway? That's our new High-Intensity Activated Crosswalk (HAWK). It is an essential tool for pedestrian safety. Unlike a standard signal, the HAWK only activates when a pedestrian pushes the button. Knowing the sequence of lights is key for drivers and pedestrians alike.

Check this quick guide on how to use and navigate a HAWK signal! ⬇️

Important safety reminders...

E-BIKES, SCOOTERS AND ALL THINGS ELECTRIC

We’re seeing more e-bikes, electric scooters, and just about anything else you can put a battery and wheels on around the Island. They’re fun, convenient, and apparently getting faster every year.

Here are a few important reminders.

PEDESTRIANS COME FIRST

Pedestrians have the right of way. Slow down, give them room, and let them know when you’re passing. A bell, a friendly “on your left,” or even an old-fashioned “excuse me” works surprisingly well.

BE COURTEOUS

Whether you’re on a bicycle, e-bike, scooter, or something electric we haven’t figured out a name for yet, you’re sharing the road and pathways with other people. Watch your speed, pay attention to your surroundings, and ride responsibly.

PARENTS, PLEASE KNOW YOUR CHILD’S LIMITATIONS

Just because an e-bike or scooter can go a certain speed doesn’t mean every young rider has the experience, judgment, or ability to safely handle it at that speed.

Before handing over the keys, or the charger, make sure your child understands how to control it, stop it, watch for traffic and pedestrians, and safely react when something unexpected happens. Experience matters, and a helmet is always a good idea.

OPEN SPACE TRAILS ARE OFF LIMITS

E-bikes, electric scooters, e-motos, and other motorized or electric devices are not permitted on Grosse Ile Open Space trails. Please respect the restrictions and help us protect these areas.

KNOW THE RULES BEFORE YOU RIDE

Grosse Ile Township has regulations regarding bicycles and e-bikes. Take a few minutes to review them and make sure everyone in your household who rides understands the rules.

We want everyone outside enjoying the Island. We just want you doing it safely, courteously, and without turning your afternoon ride into an unexpected conversation with one of us.

Ride smart. Slow down around people. Respect the trails. Get home safe.

🚲 The multi-use path opens to cyclists and pedestrians on Wednesday, August 5, 2026. Open seven days a week, summer hours are 8am to 8pm with last entry at 7pm.

🚲 The multi-use path opens to cyclists and pedestrians on Wednesday, August 5, 2026. Open seven days a week, summer hours are 8am to 8pm with last entry at 7pm. We ask path users to:

• Be patient. Expect line-ups entering the path and line-ups at border processing. is limiting the number of people that can be on the path at any one time over the initial opening days to support smooth operations.
• Be prepared: Remember to bring your cross-border travel documents that are required upon entry/re-entry into both Canada and the US.
• Plan your trip: There is no on-site parking at either port of entry. In Windsor, parking is available at the Malden Park trailhead. In Detroit, parking is available at the Clark Park trailhead. Check local maps for public parking and learn more about amenities on either side of the border by visiting Tourism Windsor Essex and Visit Detroit.
• Set aside sufficient time: Anticipate a one-way 20-minute crossing by bike or 45-minute crossing by foot. This does not include travel to and from the entrances/exits of the path or border processing times.
• Keep yourself safe: Stay hydrated, wear bike safety gear when cycling, and know your limits. From entrance to exit, the path is 3 km/1.8 miles and can be steep in some areas with an approximate 5% incline.
• Keep others safe: Always signal your intentions, give pedestrians the right-of-way and know this is not a race. (Maximum 20 km/h or 12 m/hr). To support a safe environment during anticipated times of high-volume activity, e-bikes are not permitted for use during the first few weeks.

We encourage pedestrians and cyclists to consider planning their journeys later in the summer and into the fall to make the crossing experience as smooth and efficient as possible. Path rules and guidelines are available on our website to review before your trip, including:

• Hours of operation
• Permitted modes of transportation
• Safety features
• Border processing
• Connecting trails and more
