This morning, the Grosse Ile Fire Department responded to Centennial Farms for reports of smoke coming from one of the restrooms located within a structure on the property. Firefighters were on scene within 3 minutes and located a trash can that was on fire.

Firefighters were able to remove that trash can from the restroom, preventing fire spread and damage to the main portions of the structure, and were able to extinguish that in the parking lot.

As a reminder, please refrain from putting anything in trash cans that was previously lit, or burning, and refrain from putting any flammable liquids or items in regular trash cans unless they are approved for disposal. Any smoking items, such as ci******es or ci**rs, should be completely out and disposed of properly.

At this time, this incident is still under investigation.

Last night, the Grosse Ile Fire Department hosted a live burn training with other mutual aid departments from the downriver area, including instructors from the Detroit Metro Airport Fire Department. This training focused on vehicle extrication techniques and vehicle fire extinguishment tactics.

The department worked with Lyons Towing in Trenton to source 4 vehicles, two older model cars and two newer model cars, for this training exercise.

A special thanks to the instructors and mutual aid partners who attended, Lyons Towing, and the Grosse Ile Municipal Airport for allowing us to use their infield.

Today on this National Day of Service and Rememberance, the Grosse Ile Fire Department remembers all the heroes that were lost on September 11th, 2001. A tragic attack and one of America's darkest days were quickly overshadowed by a nation that came together to help all those injured, lost, or killed.

Today, we honor all those who were injured or killed, the hundreds of heroes who responded, and those who never had the chance to make it home.

Grosse Ile Fire Department's

What are the differences between Smoke, carbon monoxide, and heat alarms, and where are they needed?

There are two different types of smoke alarms for sensing “fires”. Ionization and/or photoelectric. Ionization tends to respond quicker to smoke that is produced by flaming fires, whereas photoelectric is seen to respond quicker to smoke produced from smoldering fires. Due to this, most fire departments recommend alarms that are combined, meaning they have both these sensing qualities. Carbon monoxide alarms, or CO alarms, are best suited to be placed at waist or ceiling level, either mounted or in outlets (plugin). This is because CO rises as it is lighter than air, and is carried by warm, rising air (EPA). They sell alarms that are ionization, photoelectric, and CO that are perfect for homes.

According to the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA), there are approximately 6,600 garage fires every year that result in an average of 30 deaths, 400 injuries, and $457 million in property loss. Most people do not think about the dangers that are lurking in their garage. We recommend installing Heat Detectors in your garage. HEAT detectors are placed inside your garage for when the temperature of your garage becomes too high. Heat detectors are more reliable than smoke detectors when placed in areas that could be dusty or dirty. Excessive heat could activate the alarms, but for those of you that keep animals in your garage, this could be beneficial.

As far as placement goes, one in each bedroom, multiple in the basement depending on size, in hallways throughout the home, and common areas. Keep them out of the direct kitchen area or they will be going off very often.
