💀 Things That Go Bump Thursday 💀

Ever hear a BANG or CRASH in the middle of the night and immediately wonder what just happened?

That’s where a glassbreak detector can add another layer of protection.

Unlike a standard door or window contact, glassbreak detectors are designed to listen for the specific sound characteristics associated with breaking glass. Depending on the room and placement, one detector may be able to help protect multiple windows or large areas of glass.

They can be especially useful around:

🪟 Large windows
🚪 Sliding glass doors
🏠 Rooms with several windows
🏢 Storefronts and commercial spaces

Door and window contacts are still important, but glassbreak detection can provide another layer of coverage if someone decides opening the window politely isn’t part of the plan.

So if something really does go bump — and then CRASH — your security system may be listening too. 👻

😧 What Was That? Wednesday 😧

You check your camera at 2:17 AM and see a giant glowing creature floating across the screen…

👻 Ghost?
🛸 Alien?
🦋 Moth approximately three inches from the camera lens?

Unfortunately for the paranormal enthusiasts, it’s usually option C.

At night, many cameras use infrared light to help see in the dark. When a bug, spiderweb, dust, or even moisture gets very close to the lens, that infrared light can reflect back and make something tiny look huge, bright, blurry, and slightly terrifying.

So before calling Ghostbusters…

🕷️ Check for spiderwebs
🧹 Give the camera lens a quick cleaning
🍂 Clear away nearby leaves or branches
👀 Make sure nothing is hanging directly in front of the camera

Sometimes the monster on your camera is just a moth with excellent timing. 😂

🎃 Terrifying Trick Tuesday 🎃

Today’s trick: Retire the “secret” spare key.

Under the doormat.
Inside the fake rock.
On top of the door frame.
Behind the planter.

They may feel like clever hiding spots… but they’re also some of the first places someone might look.

If you need a backup way into your home, consider:

🔑 Leaving a spare with someone you trust
🔐 Using a properly installed lockbox
📱 Adding a smart lock or keypad entry
👤 Giving family members their own access code

Convenience is great — as long as it doesn’t make getting into your home convenient for everyone else.

If your hiding spot has been used in a horror movie, it might be time for a new plan. 👻

🎃 Monster Myth Monday 🎃

MYTH: “I have pets, so I can’t use motion detectors.”

FALSE! 👻

Having a four-legged roommate doesn’t automatically mean motion detection is off the table.

Many modern motion detectors are designed with pet immunity in mind. With the right equipment and proper placement, they can help distinguish between normal pet activity and movement that may actually need your attention.

A few things still matter:

🐕 The size of your pet
🏠 The layout of the room
📍 Where the detector is installed
🛋️ Whether pets can climb onto furniture in its detection area

Every home is a little different, so proper equipment selection and installation make a big difference.

Your dog might chase ghosts, but your motion detector doesn’t have to.” 👻🐶

🔐 Sunday Security Check 🔐

When was the last time you actually looked at your alarm yard sign?

It may seem like a small detail, but visible security signage is one of the easiest ways to let people know your property is protected.

Take a quick walk outside today and check:

🪧 Is your yard sign still visible from the street?
🌳 Have bushes or landscaping grown around it?
☀️ Is it faded, cracked, or damaged from the weather?
🪟 Are your window decals still visible and in good shape?

Security isn’t always about adding another piece of equipment. Sometimes it’s simply making sure the protection you already have is noticeable.

A little sign can send a pretty big message. 👻

😱 Saturday Scare! 😱

You’re away for the weekend when your water heater decides your basement could use an indoor pool…

Do you:

A. Hope the floor drain is feeling ambitious
B. Wait for the neighbor to notice
C. Find out when you get home Sunday night
D. Have a water sensor alert you when the leak starts

We’re going with D. 💧

Water sensors can be placed near water heaters, sump pumps, utility sinks, washing machines, and other areas where a leak could quickly turn into a much bigger problem.

They may not stop the leak themselves, but getting notified early can give you a chance to act before things get really messy.

The only thing overflowing this October should be the candy bowl! 👻

👻 Fright-Free Friday 👻

Q: What happens to my security system if the internet goes out?

A: Don’t panic — losing Wi-Fi doesn’t necessarily mean losing your security system.

Many modern alarm systems use cellular communication, either as their primary connection or as a backup communication path. Depending on how your system is set up, it may still be able to communicate with the monitoring center even if your home internet goes down.

📶 Internet out?

📱 Cellular communication can help keep your system connected.

🔋 Power outage? Many alarm systems also have a backup battery to help keep things running.

Every system is a little different, so it’s always worth knowing how yours communicates and what backup options you have.

💀 Things That Go Bump Thursday 💀

Ever hear a mysterious THUD from the garage and immediately wonder what just fell over?

Sometimes the bigger question is…

Did I remember to close the garage door? 👀

Garages can easily become one of the forgotten areas of home security. Depending on your system, you may be able to:

🚗 Monitor whether the garage door is open or closed
📱 Receive alerts if it’s been left open
🚪 Protect the entry door between the garage and your home
📹 Add camera coverage to keep an eye on the area

Between vehicles, tools, bikes, and access to the house, there’s usually quite a bit worth protecting in there.

So next time something goes BUMP in the garage…

Hopefully it’s just the rake falling over again. 👻

🎃 We’re Halfway Through Spooky Security Month! 🎃

We’ve spent the first half of October talking about some of the little things that can help keep your home or business a little less spooky.

So far, we’ve covered:

🔋 Battery Maintenance
Cold weather and changing temperatures can bring low-battery troubles to the surface. Keeping sensor, smoke/CO, and panel batteries maintained can help prevent surprise trouble signals.

🚨 Security Systems Do More Than Stop Break-Ins
Modern systems can help monitor for intrusion, smoke, carbon monoxide, water leaks, temperature changes, and more.

📹 Cameras & Alarm Systems Work Better Together
Cameras are great for seeing what’s happening, but door contacts, motion detectors, monitoring, and other layers all play their own part.

🕷️ Keep Those Cameras Clean
Spiderwebs, leaves, branches, and even a good fall breeze can create a whole lot of unnecessary motion notifications.

🚪 Don’t Forget the Basics
Locks, doors, windows, and the less-used entrances around your property still matter. Sometimes good security starts with the simple stuff.

📱 Keep Your System Information Current
Review user codes, app access, emergency contacts, and notifications every once in a while to make sure the right people still have access.

🔥 Life Safety Matters Too
Monitored smoke and heat detection can help protect your property even when nobody is there.

🏠 Security Can Help While You’re Away
Remote access, alerts, temperature monitoring, cameras, and other connected features can help keep you informed when you’re not home.

And apparently we’ve also learned that our technicians are willing to do some very serious field testing to make sure camera coverage is just right. 😂

We’re only halfway through the month, so there are still plenty of tricks, tips, myths, and things that go bump left to cover.

What security topic would you like us to talk about before Halloween? 👻
