As Veterans Day approaches, we’re reflecting on the many ways we can honor those who served.

Last month, our own Alex Szwarc had the privilege of serving as a guardian on Mid-Michigan Honor Flight’s Mission 27, accompanying 84-year-old Army veteran Gerald Cieszlak on a journey to Washington, D.C. and Virginia.

For Alex, who brings a genuine passion for veterans and their stories to his work at The War Memorial, the experience was especially meaningful.

Alongside 80 veterans, Alex visited the memorials dedicated to their service and sacrifice and witnessed an emotional welcome home from hundreds who gathered to say one simple thing: thank you.

The journey offered a powerful reminder of what it means to live an important part of our mission: to honor those who served.

Last week, our team at The War Memorial joined community members at Great Lakes National Cemetery for a day of service and giving back. It was an honor to help care for the resting place of those who have given so much in service to our country.

The Veteran Wellness Creative Class is underway at The War Memorial!

This is a new creative wellness experience designed specifically for veterans. Over the next few weeks, participants will explore memoir, poetry, fiction, and visual design while connecting with fellow veterans in a supportive, creative environment.

We’re proud to make this program possible thanks to generous grant support from the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Legacy Funds Grosse Pointe Community Assets Program.

We’re incredibly grateful for their investment in meaningful opportunities that support and strengthen veterans in our community!

A heartfelt thank you to the incredible staff at Great Lakes National Cemetery for the important work they do every day to honor our nation’s service members and veterans. 🇺🇸

Earlier this week, staff from The War Memorial joined community members for a cleanup effort at Michigan’s largest veterans cemetery. It was a meaningful opportunity to give back to those who have given so much for our country.

We’re proud to continue our partnership with Great Lakes National Cemetery on Nov. 5 with a VetConnect Seminar Series at The War Memorial.

On Tuesday morning, employees and community partners from the War Memorial of Grosse Pointe visited the Great Lakes National Cemetery for a few hours. They were graced with some amazing weather while they volunteered to help maintain the beauty of our national shrine and it was great talking with them. The War Memorial is truly a beautiful place if you've never visited them and they put on a lot of events for Veterans and the public. A huge thank you for your work!

What a night for Supper Club. 🍂

Last night’s Harvest Dinner brought together a seasonal three-course menu from Executive Chef Joe Paxton, live music from The Aston Neighborhood Pleasure Club and a beautiful fall evening at The War Memorial.
