Here’s an Arizona legislator’s perspective on the consequences of stripping local governments’ ability to regulate short-term rentals and a cautionary tale for Michigan.

If Michigan’s legislators pass HB 4722, they would be opening the door to the unintended consequences that have burdened Arizona.

Please read the Michigan Municipal League’s (MML) analysis of HB 4722 which would preempt local zoning law regarding short-term rentals.

The bill now goes to the state senate. MML has created this easy link to share your comments with Sen. Adam Hollier, Lt. Gov. Garland Gilchrist, and Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.

Unfortunately, while we were sleeping, the Michigan State House passed HB 4722, which, if passed into law, would preempt local zoning and allow short-term rental as a permitted residential use of property. Read more at the link.

Please see the linked information from the Michigan Municipal League regarding pending short term rental legislation in the state house. The pending bill eliminates local zoning control for short-term rentals. The league is advocating for a compromise legislation that would balance private property rights with local control.

I understand the house is still in session as of 9:30 PM waiting for something to happen. My contacts at MML advise that Rep. Yancey (house district 1/Detroit/GPW) needs calls/texts.

Please contact your State Representatives tonight as they move forward with voting on the harmful House Bill 4722 that would eliminate a municipality’s ability to regulate short-term vacation renta…

I attended the SEMCOG General Assembly today. Thank you to the Ford House for hosting us.

Great panel and discussion. Among the hot topics, not surprisingly, was water infrastructure. I advised the panel that the “next storm” is what is what keeps me and our residents awake at night. I asked how we get the regional fix, which includes increased capacity and resiliency, because spending our tax dollars on our system alone will not solve the bigger problems. While I didn’t get a clear answer, I intend to continue pushing our partners to work on these solutions.

Of course, the agenda included Washington and Lansing legislative updates and what dollars may be flowing to local communities for infrastructure (the broad priorities being transportation, water, energy, and broadband). Stay tuned.

Please visit SEMCOG.org for a wealth of resources on these and many other topics relevant to local governments in our region.
