Just before 3:00 AM this morning, the City of Groton Fire Department responded to a two-car motor vehicle accident involving a utility pole.

Crews arrived to find both vehicles off the roadway, with two utility poles snapped and an electrical utility box destroyed.

One patient was transported to the hospital with minor injuries, two individuals refused medical treatment, and two occupants fled the scene on foot. The exact cause of the crash remains under investigation.

⚠️Please avoid the area of Mitchell Street and North as utility crews continue working to restore power to the traffic signals at the intersection.⚠️

New Release City of Groton Police Department

On 07/09/2026, City of Groton Police Officers and Detectives, along Ledyard Police officers attempted to serve an active warrant on 18-year-old City of Groton Resident Jaden Rivera. The warrant was issued on July 7, 2026 from incident that occurred in the Town of Ledyard in 2024.

Mr. Rivera was located at a residence on Shennecosset Rd. in the City, and the officers attempted to apprehend him as he left the home and entered a vehicle in the parking lot. Mr. Rivera ignored the officer’s attempts to take him into custody and instead the vehicle fled, deliberately striking an occupied City of Groton police vehicle in the parking lot during the escape. Mr. Rivera was in the company of a second male, who also entered the vehicle, and it is unknown at this time who was operating the car.

The officers began an immediate search of the area, and mutual aid assistance was requested from neighboring agencies. Troopers, Officers, K9 teams, and Drone Units responded from the Connecticut State Police, Groton Town, Ledyard, Montville, Stonington, East Lyme, New London and DEEP.

The vehicle was located at Bayberry Lane Boat Launch, but Mr. Rivera and the unknown male had fled on foot. An extensive search of the area was conducted but neither individual was located. The vehicle was seized and taken to the City of Groton Police Department.

This investigation is still active and additional criminal charges will be forthcoming.

The City of Groton Police Department is asking for assistance from the community, and anyone with information is asked to contact the detective unit at (860) 445-2451.

2 DAYS AWAY!!!!

🎆Fireworks Traffic & Parking Reminder for Saturday, July 11 🎆

Fireworks start at approximately 9:20 PM.

🚧 Road Closures (6:00 PM until after the fireworks):

- Thames Street will be closed to all vehicle traffic.
- Portions of Monument Street and Park Avenue will also be closed.
- Side streets connecting to Thames Street (between Bridge Street and Allen Street) will be barricaded. No Entry
- Vehicles will not be permitted once barricades are in place.

🚗 No Parking:
- Thames Street: No parking after 8:00 AM.
- Surrounding streets: No parking after 2:00 PM.
- Vehicles parked in these areas will be towed at the owner's expense.

As we make our way into the final week leading up to the Groton/New London Fireworks on Saturday, July 11, we ask that residents, community members, and visitors adhere to the safety guidelines and traffic regulations that have been put in place for the event.
