The GCT is proud to be part of the Nature4MA Coalition. The coalition has been working on a ballot initiative to fund environmental actions without raising taxes.

On November 3, 2026, we will have the opportunity to vote YES to Question 6 for the Protect Water and Nature Initiative. This will be done by dedicating state taxes already in place on sporting goods for a Nature For All Fund - as much as $100 million dollars a year. That means no new taxes and a dedicated fund for public greenways, land protection, and clean water.

Shelter Building Workshop with Owl Eyes Survival

Owl Eyes Survival in collaboration with the Groton Conservation Trust

Sunday, August 9, 2026, 9:00 AM – noon

Spending time outdoors is healthy and fun. However, safety first! Nature is unpredictable and sometimes the unexpected happens. Shelter is your first line of defense from environmental exposure such as wind, rain, snow, sun, and air temperature.

During this kid friendly workshop we will build a debris shelter from sticks and leaves. This class will teach essential skills to safely select an area to build a shelter for a survival situation. Clothing selection will also be covered, as proper clothing can make a huge difference in adverse weather.

This class requires movement and labor so be prepared to work hard while enjoying all the outdoors has to offer! Recommended for ages 7 and up. A parent or caregiver is expected to stay on the premises to chaperone.

Give your child safety and peace with this free event thanks to a grant from the Groton Trust Funds, but registration is required. Registration is limited to 10. Only a few spaces remain.

Dense blazing star (Liatris spicata) — a native plant. Indigenous people used the flowers to make a fade-resistant dye. Visit the Bates land off Old Ayer Road to see this and so many other wildflowers in the meadow! (A Groton Conservation Trust property)

Summer is meadow season! Who doesn’t love a view of beautiful wildflowers and grasses. Meadows provide essential habitats for birds, pollinators, and other creatures. They’re also good for us humans.

We are starting to feel more extreme temperatures from climate change. Meadows are essential for maintaining humidity and cooling the air like a natural air conditioner. The grasses and wildflowers absorb moisture from the ground and releases it into the air through their leaf pores. As the water changes from a liquid to a gas it cools the air, a process called evapotranspiration. Meadows also don’t trap as much heat, rather they reflect more of the sun’s light and it protects the soil from baking in the sun.
