PLAY EVERY TOWN: 252 Community Concerts for a Cooler Climate
Saturday May 30th,
3pm at the Groton United Methodist Church
In 2022 composer-pianist David Feurzeig embarked on Play Every Town: 252 free concerts in each of Vermont’s 252 towns to confront climate change through the power of community and music. Groton native Leah Gagnon will join David for Poulenc’s Flute Sonata. Mozart’s quirky Gigue K.574 was written in 1789, the year Groton was chartered, while Beethoven’s Sonata in G major op. 49 no. 2 was composed the year of the first Town Meeting. Music by Schumann will mark the year the hosting Methodist Church was built, with music by Satie from the year of its remodel, and more Satie from 1895, when the Groton Free Library was established. R.M. Stults’ “Old Sentinel March” honors Groton’s most famous resident, William Scott, the “Sleeping Sentinel” of Vermont’s 3 rd Regiment.
Finally, this concert will include a special outdoor segment with David playing the world’s only granite calliope, built from a single local stone by Groton resident John Gordon. There will be a small reception with refreshments following the concert.
This program is free, but donations will be accepted for Re-Treasured Community Closet to support climate and community resiliency in Groton.
