Groveland Fire Rescue consists of 23 Firefighters, 4 Lieutenants, 2 Captains, 1 Assistant Chief, and the Chief of Department. Chief Lay, with the assistance of Department officers, manages the administration, day-to-day operations, code enforcement, public education activities, and permitting. Groveland Fire Rescue provides its services out of two Fire Stations in Groveland. Central Station, which

is located at 181 Main St, and South Station, located at 107 Washington St. From January 1, 2016 through December 31, 2016 the Department responded to a total of 640 emergency calls for service, serving a population of 6,500 residents and an area of 9.4 square miles. Groveland Fire Rescue is part of the District 15 Mutual Aid network and provides mutual aid for all services to surrounding communities. Fire/Rescue Communications are handled by the Groveland Police Department, which staffs the Emergency Communication Center 24/7, 365 days a year. Groveland Fire Rescue operates a fleet of nine vehicles including 3 Engine Companies, 1 Ladder Company, 2 Squad Companies, a combination Company, and a 2,000 gallon water tanker. The Fire Chief’s car (Car 1) is used for incident command purposes and for the chief to conduct official business in (see apparatus page). Utilizing this equipment, the Department serves the town in all areas of fire suppression, motor vehicle accident response, alarm investigations, emergency medical services, public education, and any other public assistance requiring our personnel and/or equipment. Emergency Medical Services are under the management of the EMS Division. All firefighters are certified to at least the “First Responder” level, with thirteen currently holding EMT certification. Medical training and operations are rapidly expanding in order to provide the town with first class emergency medical services. Groveland Fire Rescue operates a Fire Prevention Division to conduct inspections and enforce fire code, as well as operating a Fire Education Program to educate on how to prevent fires and what to do if there is a fire. The Department’s Training Division is responsible for developing and executing training evolutions, and ensuring that all members are up to current standards in EMS, as well as ensuring compliance with NFPA 1001 standards. Firefighters train together as a Department once a week in various topics to keep their skills at an expert level. Firefighters also attend individually, and in small groups, various classes offered through the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy. Training to a high level in all areas of operation continues to be a top priority for the Department. Groveland Fire Rescue’s overall mission is to continue to make Groveland a safe community to live and work in, and to offer Fire/Rescue services in the most cost effective and practical manner. We are committed to maintaining a positive image for the Town of Groveland. The brief summary above is a simple overview. GROVELAND — Chief Robert Valentine reports that the Groveland Fire Department responded to a house fire on Saturday afternoon. On Saturday, Dec. 28, at approximately 12:15 p.m., Groveland Fire responded to a fire alarm activation and 911 call reporting a fire at 8 View Hill Road, a group home for individuals with disabilities. Upon arrival, crews found smoke throughout the one-story home and an active fire in the basement. Before firefighters arrived, all residents and staff had evacuated the building. Trinity EMS evaluated three residents at the scene for smoke inhalation, but they didn't require hospitalization. No one else was injured. Preliminarily, the fire appears to have begun in a gas-fed boiler and extended into the flue system and chimney. Firefighters stretched a hose line into the basement and, at about 1:10 p.m., brought the fire under control. The residents will be displaced, but arrangements have been made for them to stay elsewhere. The West Newbury and Georgetown fire departments provided mutual aid at the fire scene, while Newburyport and Newbury covered stations in town. Trinity EMS also provided rehab for firefighters. The fire appears to be accidental but remains under investigation by the Groveland Fire Department. "I would like to commend our firefighters who arrived on the scene quickly and were able to contain the fire to the basement and save the home," Chief Valentine said. "We thank our mutual aid partners for their assistance." # # #
