Our Story
We are a grassroots group of advocates who came together to support the proposed joint project by Five Cities Homeless Coalition and People’s Self Help Housing. We were concerned at the responses from some of our neighbors who opposed this much needed project, as homelessness has increased across the country and we know that the issue is multifactorial. At this time, the fate of the Hillside project remains undetermined and largely out of our hands, but there is plenty of work to be done on housing affordability across the state of California, and San Luis Obispo County is no exception.
In the years preceding the controversy at Hillside, there has been a growing movement across the state, and the country, in response to dramatically increased housing costs. Just in the last several months, major publications, including the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, The Atlantic, Forbes and Time Magazine have all published in-depth coverage of the housing affordability crisis that is crippling young families, seniors, and students across the United States. More and more working folks are being pushed further and further away from their work due to lack of affordable housing, increasing traffic and taking hours away from their careers and families. A growing group of people are underhoused and are cramped into homes that are too small or unsafe, paying exorbitant rents while sharing housing units that don’t meet their needs. Seniors aged 50-64 are the fastest growing group of people suddenly finding themselves homeless. All of sudden, metro areas across the country are experiencing the same trends. And we’re not here by accident.
To make a long and complex story as short as possible - housing policy for the last several decades has been one that is increasingly exclusive and punishing to the young, poor, and minorities. As cities have grown in employment and population, they have failed to provide adequate housing for the newest and neediest residents at the behest of those who showed up first, and with more money.
The good news is that we have a growing body of evidence that suggests there answers to these problems. If policy has caused the housing crisis, then policy can help fix it. We can cut down the cost of housing by increasing the supply. We can cut down on traffic by investing in public transportation. We can make neighborhoods livable, walkable, and beautiful by putting thoughtful planning into how we grow, and planning for the future before it gets here. SLOCo YIMBY wants to have a hand in that future.
