At 10:14 AM on Tuesday, May 12, the Guilderland Fire Department was requested for a Hazardous Materials Decontamination mutual aid response to the Albany County Water Treatment Facility located at 143 New Salem South Road in Voorheesville, following reports of a chlorine leak.

Guilderland firefighters responded with the department’s Hazardous Materials Decontamination Trailer and specialized equipment, standing by on scene while ventilation and atmospheric metering operations were conducted by the West Albany Fire Department's Hazardous Materials Team. The incident was ultimately determined to be safe, with no exposures reported to first responders.

This incident marked the first emergency response for the Guilderland Fire Department in its role as the Albany County Hazardous Materials Decontamination Unit. Department members have completed New York State Hazardous Materials Decontamination training and continue to participate in ongoing refresher training and requalification programs to maintain readiness and competency in this critical public safety function.

Earlier this afternoon, members of the Guilderland Fire Department responded to a working structure fire on Fort Hunter Road in the Fort Hunter Fire District.

The crew of Engine 27 assisted with fireground operations alongside other mutual aid agencies, while Guilderland’s Structural Decontamination Team was also dispatched to the scene to provide firefighter decontamination services following interior operations.

Firefighter decontamination plays a critical role in reducing exposure to harmful carcinogens and contaminants encountered during fires, helping protect the long-term health and safety of our members.

Training Night in Guilderland 🚒

Tonight, our members were out on the drill ground sharpening one of the most critical fireground skills—deploying hose lines at a simulated fire.

Not all hose is packed the same, and that’s by design. Our apparatus carry different hose loads like flat loads, triple-layer loads, and Minuteman loads—each built for a specific situation.

🔥 Tight spaces?
🔥 Long stretches from the hydrant?
🔥 Larger fire conditions?

Each load allows our firefighters to deploy quickly and efficiently based on the scenario, staffing, and building layout—getting water on the fire fast, without delays or tangles.

Because when it matters most, seconds count—and the right setup makes all the difference.

Train like it’s real. Serve when it is.

🚩 RED FLAG WARNING – TUESDAY 🚩

The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning from 12:00 PM to 7:00 PM Tuesday for the Capital District and Mid-Hudson Valley due to critical fire weather conditions.

What this means:
• Dry conditions + low humidity
• Gusty winds
• Fires can start easily and spread fast

🔥 No outdoor burning. Period.
Even something small can get out of control quickly in these conditions.

We’re asking everyone to do their part:
• Avoid campfires, brush burning, and fire pits
• Properly dispose of ci******es
• Secure trailer chains to prevent sparks
• Use extreme caution with anything that could create heat or flame

Our crews are ready, but prevention is what matters today.

If you see smoke or fire, call 911 immediately.

Stay safe, stay alert — and help us keep our community protected. 🚒

There was a time when joining the fire department meant walking down to your local station, shaking someone’s hand, and stepping into something bigger than yourself.

A lot has changed since then.
Life is busier. Schedules are tighter. The world moves faster.

But one thing hasn’t changed…

When someone in our community calls for help, we still show up.

That doesn’t happen by accident. It happens because of people—ordinary people—who decide they’re willing to do something extraordinary.

People with jobs, families, responsibilities… who still make the choice to serve.

Right now, we’re looking for the next group of men and women willing to answer that call.

No experience needed.
We’ll train you.
We’ll stand beside you.
And you’ll become part of something that truly matters.

If you’ve ever thought about it—even for a second—this is your sign.

Your community depends on people like you.

On Saturday, April 18th, members of the Guilderland Fire Department were proud to be part of this year’s YMCA Kids Day at the Guilderland YMCA.

It was a great day connecting with so many wonderful families from our community. The highlight for many of the kids was getting hands-on and having the chance to spray a real fire hose! Always a crowd favorite!

Events like this are what it’s all about building relationships, educating the public, and hopefully inspiring the next generation of volunteer firefighters.

Thank you to the Guilderland YMCA for including us and to everyone who stopped by to say hello!

🚨 ELEVATED RISK FOR FIRE SPREAD – SATURDAY 🚨

The Guilderland Fire Department is advising residents of an elevated risk for fire spread across our area on Saturday.

🌬️ Wind Gusts: Up to 30 MPH
🔥 Low Humidity: 30–35%
🌲 Drying Fuels: Following recent rain

These conditions—especially during the afternoon hours—create the perfect environment for fires to start and spread rapidly.

🚫 REMINDER: NYS BURN BAN IN EFFECT UNTIL MAY 14
• No open burning permitted
• No burn permits are issued

⚠️ PLEASE USE EXTREME CAUTION
• Avoid using equipment that may create sparks
• Do not discard ci******es on the ground
• Properly extinguish all potential ignition sources

Even a small spark can quickly turn into a large fire under these conditions.

For more information, visit the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation website.

👨‍🚒 Stay safe and help protect our community.
