This past Saturday we teamed up with the Branford Police Department and North Branford Police Department to host our first ever “Traffic Stop Practice for Newly Licensed Drivers” event. New drivers and their parents learned all about what to do (and what not to do) when getting pulled over, possible outcomes of a traffic stop, what to do if you’re involved in a traffic crash, and about CT’s Blue, Green, and Yellow Envelope Programs. The teen drivers then got the chance to experience “mock” traffic stops in the parking lot of Guilford High School, where officers “pulled them over” to demonstrate how a traffic stop plays out in real life. 🚔

Everyone who participated expressed how helpful and educational this program was, and we hope to host another one of these events in the future! Thank you to all the teens and their parents who came out to spend a very windy and rainy Saturday morning with Officer Gingras, Officer Harkins, Officer Abely from Branford Police, and Officer Cunningham from North Branford Police. 👮‍♂️👮

Also, a huge shoutout to the CT Chiefs of Police Association, CT Department of Transportation, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and CT Department of Motor Vehicles for creating this program and making it available for police departments throughout the state to implement!

This Pride Month, the Guilford Police Department proudly reaffirms our commitment to creating a safe, welcoming, and inclusive community for everyone. 🏳️‍🌈

We believe that every person deserves to feel supported, and are committed to treating all individuals with dignity and respect, while standing up against hate, discrimination, and violence in any form. Further, that we are a safe place for reporting hate crimes against the LGBTQ+ community or any other protected class.

If you experience or witness an anti-LGBTQ+ hate crime or bias-related incident, please know that our officers are here to help you and you will be treated with professionalism, compassion, and respect.

We feel very lucky to serve the Guilford community and all the people who make up this amazing town.

Thank you for sharing, and please know we are a safe place. 💚

Hey Guilford, have you heard about our new “Slow Down, Enjoy Our Town!” initiative?! 👀

With speeding being one of the top traffic-related complaints in our community, and a main contributing factor to accidents, we’re encouraging everyone to slow down when hitting the roads. After all, you won’t be able to take in all that our amazing community has to offer if you’re speeding on through!

And if you need a little reminder to take it slow, stop by one of our upcoming community events this summer and we’ll give you one of these very cool vinyl stickers featuring a Guilford landmark, so you won’t forget to slow it down!

Thank you in advance for joining us in helping to make our streets the safest they can be. Remember, slow down, and enjoy our town! 👮‍♂️👮

May is National Bicycle Safety Month, and School Resource Officer Thornton has a few important bicycle safety tips for you to keep in mind! 🚴‍♀️🚴‍♂️

🚴 Most importantly, always wear a helmet. While CT state law requires anyone under the age of 16 to wear a helmet, we encourage everyone to wear a helmet on every ride. And for e-bike riders, you must wear a helmet regardless of age.

💡 If you’re riding after dusk or before dawn, a headlight is required, as well as a rear reflector or light.

🦺 Wear bright clothing, or a reflective vest.

🛑🚦Follow the rules of the road, including stopping at all stop signs and traffic lights. Ride with traffic, not against it.

🚴‍♂️🚴‍♀️ If you’re crossing the road, wait until it is safe to do so. Ride as far to the right side of the road as you can. Bicyclists may only ride two abreast when it does not impede traffic.

✋ Use hand signals when turning, stopping, or changing lanes.

👀 Be aware of your surroundings and ride like other people don’t see you, because chances are they don’t!

See you next time, and ride safe! 👮👮‍♂️

Hey teens and parents/guardians! We are extending the registration deadline for our first ever “Traffic Stop Practice for Newly Licensed Drivers” event to next Wednesday, May 27th! We still have seats open and encourage any newly licensed drivers to sign up!

We're excited to be teaming up with the Branford Police Department and North Branford Police Department for this educational event which will be held on Saturday, May 30th from 9AM-12PM at Guilford High School (605 New England Rd.)

The program will consist of two parts: Starting at 9AM, a slideshow presentation held in the Guilford High School library, followed by mock traffic stops in the school parking lot.

What You'll Learn 👮‍♂️👮
🚗 What to do when you see the flashing lights (and what NOT to do)
🚙 Possible outcomes of a traffic stop
🚗 What to do if you're involved in a traffic crash
🚙 About CT's Blue, Green, and Yellow Envelope Programs

The mock traffic stop will then show new drivers first hand how a traffic stop plays out in real life.

This event is free and open to any newly licensed drivers residing in Guilford, Branford, and North Branford. Drivers must have a valid driver's license or learner's permit, must attend with a parent or guardian, and must bring their valid license/permit, vehicle registration, and insurance card to the event.

➡️ Click the link in the comments below or visit guilfordpd.com to register by Saturday, May 23rd (registration is required).

We hope this program will help newly licensed drivers stay calm, safe, and informed during a traffic stop. Thank you for sharing, and hope to see you there! 🚓🚓

*The Breaking Barriers Mock Traffic Stop Event for Newly Licensed Drivers was created by the CT Chiefs of Police Association in partnership with the CT Department of Transportation, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and CT Department of Motor Vehicles. The program is designed to strengthen communication and understanding between police officers and motorists, particularly new drivers.
