Congratulations to the 58th graduating class from the Connecticut State fire Academy Cadet program “Introduction to the Fire Service“.

Jim Strong , Lt. Mike Speringo and Deputy Chief Robert Auger as lead advisors, are very proud of all the Cadets and what they have accomplished. One year ago, we combined five Shoreline towns for Fire Cadet Training. Clinton, Guilford, Haddam, Killingworth and Westbrook. These Cadets have trained consistently every Tuesday night throughout the past year. Their hard work, training and passion, for the fire service has been proven at the Academy.

Dear Residents of Guilford,
Many of you have likely noticed the haze in the air and the unique, milky or orange tinted sky today. This is not local, it is caused by smoke from major wildfires burning in Canada, primarily in southern Ontario (with additional contributions from fires in northern Minnesota). Strong upper-level winds have carried the smoke plume hundreds of miles south and east, bringing it across the Great Lakes and directly into Southern New England, including Connecticut.
Important Update:
The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) has issued a statewide Air Quality Alert for fine particles (PM2.5) today, Wednesday, July 15, and Thursday, July 16, 2026. Air quality levels are currently in the “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups” range across much of the state.

What you should know & do:
Sensitive groups (children, older adults, pregnant people, and anyone with heart or lung conditions such as asthma or COPD) should limit outdoor activities and strenuous exercise.
Everyone should reduce prolonged or heavy outdoor exertion when possible.
Keep windows closed if indoor air quality feels poor and use air conditioning on recirculate mode.
Check real-time Air Quality Index (AQI) before going outside: airnow.gov or the CT DEEP website.

The Guilford Fire Department is closely monitoring the situation in coordination with state and local agencies. This smoke event is affecting air quality and visibility but does not present an immediate wildfire threat to our town. We will continue to provide updates as conditions change.

✅ BOIL WATER ORDER LIFTED – GUILFORD

The Town of Guilford has been notified by Connecticut Water that the mandatory Boil Water Order has been lifted for customers served by the Guilford Water System.

You may now resume normal use of your tap water. Repeat water samples have confirmed that the water meets all state and federal safe drinking water standards and does not present a risk of E. coli contamination.

Connecticut Water has advised that the boil water order was issued Friday after a single routine water sample collected at one tap in Essex indicated the presence of E. coli bacteria. Although all other water samples, including those collected from water sources, showed no evidence of contamination, Connecticut Department of Public Health regulations required Connecticut Water to issue a precautionary Boil Water Order for customers served by the interconnected water systems while additional testing was completed.

The results of the follow-up testing confirmed that this was an isolated incident at one localized sampling location in Essex and not a widespread issue within the water system.
The Town of Guilford appreciates the prompt response and continued communication from Connecticut Water, the Connecticut Department of Public Health, and all local and regional partners throughout this event. We also thank our residents for their patience, understanding, and cooperation while this precautionary public health measure was in effect.

🚨 BOIL WATER ORDER UPDATE – JULY 10, 2026 🚨

The Town of Guilford is sharing the following update from Connecticut Water regarding the mandatory Boil Water Order, which remains in effect for customers served by the Guilford Water System.

Connecticut Water continues to work closely with the Connecticut Department of Public Health after E. coli was detected in one routine water sample collected in Essex. As a precaution, the Boil Water Order remains in effect for customers in Deep River, Essex, Haddam, Chester, Old Saybrook, Westbrook, Clinton, Madison, and Guilford while additional testing is completed.

Connecticut Water understands this situation is disruptive and appreciates everyone's patience. The company performs more than 120,000 routine water quality tests each year, and this boil water order is required by the Connecticut Department of Public Health while follow-up testing is underway.

Please continue to:

Bring tap water to a rolling boil for at least one (1) minute before:
Drinking
Preparing food or baby formula
Making ice
Brushing your teeth
Washing dishes
Tap water may continue to be used for bathing, showering, and laundry.

Free drinking water is available from Connecticut Water at the following locations. Please bring your own clean container for filling:

Connecticut Water has advised that another update will be provided by approximately 8:00 PM this evening, or sooner if new information becomes available.

The Connecticut Water Company has issued a mandatory Boil Water Order for customers served by the Guilford Water System, after E. coli bacteria was detected during routine testing at one sample location in Essex.

If you are a Connecticut Water customer in Guilford:

Do NOT drink tap water without boiling it first.

Bring water to a rolling boil for at least one (1) minute, then allow it to cool before using it for:

Drinking
Preparing food or baby formula
Making ice
Brushing your teeth
Washing dishes

⚠️ If your home is served by a private well, this Boil Water Order does NOT apply to you.

Connecticut Water is working closely with the Connecticut Department of Public Health and has completed additional water sampling throughout the system. Test results are expected within approximately 24 hours, and updates will be provided as they become available.

Let the Pros Light Up the Sky

Guilford Fire Department’s Fireworks Safety WarningThis July 4th, the thrill of fireworks can turn deadly in seconds. The Guilford Fire Department is urging everyone in our community to skip the DIY displays and enjoy professional shows instead, because the numbers don’t lie, and the consequences are heartbreaking.

In 2024 alone, an estimated 14,700 people across the United States were treated in emergency rooms for fireworks-related injuries, a staggering 52% increase from the previous year.

Tragically, 11 people lost their lives. Burns made up about 38% of all injuries, with hands and fingers (35%) and the head, face, and ears (22%) hit hardest. Sparklers, often seen as “harmless fun” sent roughly 1,700 people to the ER. These aren’t rare flukes.

Young people are especially vulnerable, and many injuries happen to bystanders just standing too close. The Fire Problem Is Just as real beyond personal injuries, fireworks started an estimated 32,302 fires in 2023 alone, including thousands of structure fires. Those fires caused 15 civilian deaths, dozens more injuries, and $142 million in direct property damage. Every year, the same story repeats: someone thinks “just this once” or “I’ve done it before,” and suddenly the celebration becomes a 911 call.

Why Professional Displays Are the Only Smart Choice

Professional pyrotechnicians are trained, licensed, and follow strict safety rules with proper setbacks, equipment, and emergency plans. Consumer fireworks in backyards? They come with no such guarantees. The safest, most spectacular way to enjoy the holiday is to attend a public professional fireworks display. You get all the “oohs” and “aahs” with zero risk to your family, your home, or your neighbors.

What You Can Do Right Now

Attend professional shows only. Check local listings for safe, permitted displays in or near Guilford.
Never buy or use consumer fireworks if they’re restricted in your area (and they often are for good reason).
Keep kids and pets at a safe distance, even from “harmless” sparklers, which burn at temperatures hot enough to cause serious burns in seconds.
Have a water source ready if you’re near any legal, permitted activity, but better yet, leave the lighting to the experts.
Report illegal fireworks use, it puts everyone at risk.

Yesterday, the Guilford Fire Department had the honor of running alongside our brothers and sisters from the Guilford Police Department, as well as several Special Olympics athletes, in support of the 2026 Connecticut Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics. Together, we carried the “Flame of Hope” through our community, helping raise awareness and support for the incredible athletes of Special Olympics Connecticut.

We are proud to support the Special Olympics movement and to stand beside these remarkable athletes whose determination, courage, and spirit inspire us all. Thank you to everyone who participated, cheered us on, and helped make this event a success.
