Josh Hellyer for School Board - District 5

Josh Hellyer for School Board - District 5 Josh Hellyer is seeking election to Santa Rosa County District 5 School Board.

My job is to hear the concerns of parents, provide solutions, and advocate for the best interest of our students.

I would like to thank all of you who have encouraged and supported me over the past few months. I decided to run for Santa Rosa County School Board because to represent parents and students. Making a positive difference would require 110% effort and commitment on my part, and with the encouragement of friends I was ready to make that commitment. However, since that time my career has taken on new challenges, travel requirements and job responsibilities. As God has blessed me with these new opportunities, it has given me a chance for continued growth, but these responsibilities have added a great deal more to my plate. Due to these unforeseen changes, I will be dropping out of the district 5 School Board Race.
This is not something I did lightly, and I discussed it with several trusted advisors over the past few weeks. In the end, the parents and students of Santa Rosa County deserve a full weight of effort from their board. I would be doing a disservice to those who I vowed to help if I took on this position and was unable to give it the attention it deserves. I will continue to remain engaged as time permits but will be doing so as a private citizen. Again, I wanted to thank all of you for your support, and one day in the future when the time is right, I will reconsider public service.

A few thoughts on Florida HB 1557 and why you should care about it. Many of you have no idea which bill I am talking about. This is likely because the bill has been mislabeled by the media and you've likely bought into the narrative.

1. HB 1557 establishes some guidelines that every parent should be happy about. First, if there is a significant change in your child's behavior, health, or well-being the school is REQUIRED to notify you. This is a good thing, the reason there are provisions for parents to pursue damages is because without some sort of penalty no law is actually enforceable.

2. Schools are not allowed to instruct 1st - 3rd graders on issues of s*xual orientation or gender identity. As a parent I do not believe the school should be teaching my 1st - 3rd grader about s*x at all. This is completely age inappropriate.

3. The majority of the text states that parents have the "fundamental right" to determine the upbringing of their children. There is even a provision written into the law that indicates "...requiring school district personnel to encourage a student to discuss issues related to his or her well-being with his or her parent OR to facilitate discussion of the issue with the parent."

This means that the "don't say gay bill" encourages children to talk about these types of issues WITH THEIR PARENTS or if teachers absolutely must weigh in they can facilitate.

This bill makes sense, but sadly it has been used by activists to attempt to divide children from their parents. Parents, do not fall for the narrative that this is somehow an anti-LGBT bill. It simply removes the ability for teachers to influence your child one way or the other, and is primarily focused on 1st - 3rd grade...when these discussions are not appropriate anyway.

I have read several articles recently related to concerns about banning books such as Maus. What I would state regarding this is that I am patently against the practice of banning books from libraries. However, I am completely understanding of the need to fence books into age appropriate categories. These are two entirely different practices. We should value diversity of opinion, provided the material is age appropriate. This is why I would be against banning books such as Mous for High School students, but would restrict texts for younger children. This is why the current terminology "book banning" should be rebuked. Parents in Tennessee were not banning books, but rather exercising their rights as parents to direct the education of their children.

This is not a new concept, we do this with almost all educational materials as children learn. You do not issue a 1st grade student a theoretical physics book. You begin with what is foundation and gradually increase the difficulty and maturity level as they age. As a parent, I would not want my child reading several great texts until High School. This is based on content that is not appropriate for their ages based on my families values. All parents have the right to make those decisions, and it is not for a federal or state bureaucracy to decide. That is why School Board members are elected and should not be appointed. Their job is to represent the interest of the primary stakeholder in these matters.

I am interested in hearing from you. I you have specific questions on where I stand on issues facing the school district please send me an email with your question. I really want to know what the parents think about our schools and what we can do better.

There are few greater responsibilities than the education of the next generation. Those with the single greatest interest in this process are parents who trust the school district to prepare their children for the challenges of adult life. The goal most parents have for their children is to provide them with skills and knowledge to allow them to succeed. This should also be the goal of anyone serving as a member of the school board. Our goal should be to engage with parents and provide policies and recommendations that enable our children to achieve incredible things.

I have spent the last 20 years in various leadership roles in the Intelligence, Business, and Ecclesiastical communities. In every one of these industries, I have constantly been involved in training, instructional system design, and educational policy decisions. As an intelligence analyst, one of the first things we learn is how to avoid confirmation bias and employ multiple factors into our analysis. The key is always knowing how the key stakeholder operates to ensure the information you provide is useful. It is not about what the analyst thinks is the best idea, but what that commander is trying to accomplish. This is the same way I will approach your concerns with the education of your children. My job will be to make decisions that support your goals regarding the education of your children.

Additionally, I understand the challenges that parents currently face. I have two children currently enrolled in Santa Rosa County Schools a 12-year-old daughter in the ESE program, and a 9-year-old son at East Bay K-8. Our parents spend the hours helping with homework, driving children to extra curriculum activities, purchasing supplies, and desire most success for their children. If elected my primary job will be to listen to parents, weigh information and craft policy that allows our children to be successful.
