🚁 🏥 FUN FACT FRIDAY: FLYING BLOOD BANK 🏥 🚁

🩸 WHAT’S RED, FLIES IN A HELICOPTER, AND CAN HELP SAVE A LIFE? BLOOD!🩸

Severe hemorrhage from traumatic injuries or otherwise can cause hemorrhagic shock, starving vital organs of the oxygen they need.

That’s why we blood products onboard—so resuscitation can start before we reach the trauma center.

🩸 Replace what’s lost
🩸 Restore oxygen-carrying capacity
🩸 Support perfusion
🩸 Buy critical time

When someone is bleeding, the back of our helicopter becomes a blood-delivery service. 🚁📦🩸

Many air and ground EMS services carry blood these days. Its value in treating life-threatening hemorrhage in the prehospital setting has been widely studied, and it’s thankfully becoming more available.

We carry several emergent release (universal donor) blood products to replace what’s lost, resuscitate in the field, and improve patient outcome en route to definitive care.

Because sometimes, the most important cargo in the helicopter isn’t fuel…

It’s blood. 🚁🩸❤️

Fast transportation is great. Advanced care in flight? Even better.

🙏 🚁 ON THURSDAYS, WE’RE THANKFUL 🚁 🙏

Today, we’re thankful for our friends at Jones College in Ellisville, MS, and the incredible team facilitating our quarterly sim labs.

🩺 Their Robert C. “Bobby” Robbins, M.D. Hospital Simulation Center is a 10,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art training facility designed to bring real-world healthcare experiences into the classroom. Among other things, it features an 8-bed emergency department, 8-bed ICU, operating and maternal-child suites, a simulated pharmacy, and a Sim Apartment for home-health and disaster-response scenarios. More than 36 cameras and three control rooms allow instructors to monitor, record, and debrief simulations.

👩🏻‍⚕️And the patients? They don’t exactly have an appointment on the books. 😆 These high-fidelity simulators can breathe, blink, speak, change vital signs, respond to questions, and even deliver babies—giving us the opportunity to practice critical skills and decision-making in a safe environment.

👨🏻‍⚕️ This week, we completed our 3rd quarter simulations. We want to give a huge shoutout to Dr. Benji Sessums, Dean of Health Sciences at Jones College, for organizing and coordinating our simulation lab experience. Dr. Sessums has spent more than two decades working with Jones College’s healthcare programs and helped lead the development of this incredible facility.

🏫 We’re grateful for Jones College, Dr. Sessums, and the entire Health Sciences team for investing in us.

Thank you for giving us a place to practice, learn, challenge ourselves—and occasionally make a mannequin question all of our life choices. 😂

💧 💦 WELCOME TO WELLNESS WEDNESDAY: THE WET EPISODE. HYDRATE LIKE YOU MEAN IT. ☀️🚁

🌞 Summer may be coming to an end (so they say?), but it’s still quite warm out there!

Hot weather + sweating + “I’ll drink something later” = a recipe for feeling rough. 🫠

Don’t wait until you’re dragging yourself toward the nearest air conditioner. Here’s how to stay ahead of dehydration:

🥤 START HYDRATING EARLY
Heading outside? Start drinking fluids before you get hot and sweaty. Don’t wait until you’re thirsty.

💧 KEEP IT WITH YOU
Make your water bottle your summer sidekick. If you’re working, exercising, boating, or spending hours outside, keep fluids within easy reach and take regular drink breaks.

🧂 SWEATING A LOT? REPLACE ELECTROLYTES.
If you’re sweating heavily for a prolonged period, especially during exercise or outdoor work, include an electrolyte-containing drink or food to help replace sodium and other electrolytes lost in sweat. Not replacing electrolytes can cause more problems!

🚽 CHECK YOUR P*E
Yep. We’re going there. 😂
Pale yellow urine generally suggests you’re adequately hydrated. Dark yellow urine or peeing much less than usual? Time to start drinking and get somewhere cool.

🥵 DON’T IGNORE THE WARNING SIGNS
Headache, dizziness, weakness, nausea, muscle cramps, unusual fatigue, thirst, and dark urine can all be signs you’re getting dehydrated.

🚨 KNOW WHEN IT’S AN EMERGENCY
Confusion, fainting, seizures, severe weakness, or other changes in mental status—especially after heat exposure—can be signs of heat stroke.

CALL 911 and start cooling the person immediately.

☀️ Our simple summer formula:
Drink early → drink regularly → replace electrolytes when needed → take cooling breaks → listen to your body.

Because we’d much rather see you carrying a water bottle than being carried to the helicopter. 😉🚁💙

Rescue 5 had the pleasure of meeting some 4th semester University of South Alabama nursing students. We got to show them what we think is the coolest job in the world 😎 🚁

Hopefully there’s at least one future flight nurse in this group 👀 💉

🚁 WELCOME TO TAIL ROTOR TUESDAY, EVERYONE! Where we introduce you to all of the pieces of our pretty Bell 407 helicopter!

What better way to start Tail Rotor Tuesday than with the tail rotor?! That little fan on the back of the Bell 407? Yeah… it’s kind of a big deal. 👀

The tail rotor keeps the helicopter from doing an unwanted pirouette 🩰 while the main rotor is spinning. It counteracts the torque from the main rotor and allows our pilots to control the direction the aircraft is pointing. 🚁

And that thing is MOVING. 💨 The tail rotor spins at roughly 2,000 RPM — that’s more than 30 rotations every second! 🤯

🔲🔳 You may have also noticed that ours is painted black and white. Those contrasting stripes make the rapidly spinning rotor easier to see, providing a visual warning that there’s a very fast-moving piece of machinery back there.

🌀 There are many types of tail rotors. Another common one you’ll find in the area is called a Fenestron. Instead of an exposed rotor, a Fenestron puts multiple smaller blades inside a shrouded housing built into the tail. Same basic mission — counteract torque and provide directional control — just a very different design.

⚠️ Rotors are serious business! If you’re ever around a helicopter, never approach or leave the aircraft without direction from a crew member. Stay where the crew tells you to stay, and never walk toward the tail.

Again, these rotors can be difficult to see — especially when they’re turning — and a helicopter is never a good place to test your reflexes.

When in doubt: STOP, stay where you are, and ask the crew. 🛑 ✋🏼

Next time you see our aircraft, give that little rotor some respect. 🫡

Small rotor. BIG job.

🚁 💪🏼 For our inaugural episode of Crew Member Monday, we bring to you our fearless leader, Ian 💪🏼 🚁

We briefly interviewed Ian, and here are some things we learned:

⚓️ He was a military brat and grew up all over the US
📚 He went to SEVERAL colleges, but claims Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College received most of his money—most recently, graduating nursing school! 👨🏻‍⚕️
👨🏻‍🚒👮🏻‍♂️ He started his career as a firefighter and police officer (and STILL works BOTH on top of flying)
👩🏻‍❤️‍👨🏻 He and his beautiful wife have two perfect children 😉

💎 Looking for a local gem? Ian has been a resident for a long while, so we trust his opinion. He recommends Rack House for their food and Shaggy’s for their atmosphere.
💤 Ian’s not known for slowing down, but when he OCCASIONALLY does, he likes to decompress by working around the house and spending time with friends and family
🪄 Ian’s hidden talent is his ability to fix almost anything (we keep him busy at Rescue 5, lets us tell you 😮‍💨). We call it his ✨boy magic✨
☀️ If Ian’s personality was a weather forecast, it’d be clear, blue, 22

🏃🏻‍♂️ If Ian were to compete on a reality TV show, it’d be “The Amazing Race”
📕 His autobiography would be called “One More Thing Before I Go”
🟧 If Ian could start any conspiracy theory, it’d be that orange crackers were designed by the government to implant microchips (We don’t know why he hates them so much!)

🎵 Ian’s walk up song would be “Enter Sandman”
🐶 If he could add any official holiday to the work calendar, it would be “Bring Your Dog to Work Day”

To know Ian is to love him—and everyone knows him! Our calm and sunny 😎🌞 with a side of “Enter Sandman” 🎸🤘🏼

🎂🚁 Help us wish Jacob, aka Pnut a very happy birthday! 🥜🎉

Our retired firefighter turned flight paramedic, Pnut has traded some of the firehouse chaos for helicopter shenanigans… but thankfully, he still brings the same dedication, experience, and questionable sense of humor to the crew. 😂🚒🚁

Here’s to another year of smooth flights, good calls, strong coffee, and just enough chaos to keep things interesting. 🚁☕️

Happy Birthday, Pnut! 🥜🎉 We hope you enjoy your day off! 🎈🎂

🎆 It’s a big day, here at Rescue 5! 🎆

Today we’re celebrating THREE of our own! 🎉🎈

👸🏼Our favorite Program Director, Johnan
👨🏻‍✈️Our pilot extraordinaire, Greg
🕺🏻And our special Pilot in Command TODAY, Tim

We’re not saying the flight crew is getting older… we’re just saying we’ve accumulated a few more hours in the logbook. 👵🏻🧓🏻

Help us wish Johnan, Greg, and Tim a very HAPPY BIRTHDAY! 🎂🎉 We hope your day is filled with good food, good laughs, smooth flights, and absolutely NO birthday turbulence.

And if you happen to see Tim out and about today, be sure to say HI and wish him a happy birthday! 👋🎈

🎂🚁 Happy Birthday, guys! We’re thankful to have you on the team!

You may not know this, but some time ago we named our helicopter, 723MT, Jolene. 🚁

Why Jolene? Well, she’s our “other woman” — the one who occasionally keeps us away from our families and homes on nights, weekends, and holidays.

Of course, it’s all in good fun! We’re incredibly grateful for the opportunity to serve our community, work alongside amazing people, and be there when our neighbors need us most.

But today, we honor Dolly Parton, a woman whose voice reached generations, whose kindness touched countless lives, and whose legacy will live far beyond the music she gave us. 💙💛

Dolly reminded us you can be strong and compassionate, successful, and humble, and that sometimes the greatest thing you can give someone is a helping hand. 💙💛

Every time our Jolene lifts off to answer a call, we'll carry a little piece of that spirit with us!

Did you know: the song "Jolene" was loosely based on a bank teller that was a little too flirty with Dolly's husband, Carl Dean? 😡 AND that "Jolene" and "I Will Always Love You" were written on the same day in 1972? 🤯

*disclaimer: unfortunately, the photo is AI. We were not privileged enough to have Mrs. Parton visit our base*
