DOG NEWS: Many of us know Nick — the goggle‑wearing German shepherd who greets military computer users on our login screen. Well, he officially retired Wednesday at Fort Meade. The 9‑year‑old (61 in dog years) explosives‑detection dog had served with the 2nd Military Police and deployed to al Asad Air Base, where his now‑famous photo was taken. He was adopted by his handler, Staff Sgt. Justin Peyton. Well‑wishers across the military community shared their gratitude. One user said his “doggled face” was the best morale boost on tough days. Petty Officer 3rd Class Marvin G. Shields remains the only Navy Seabee to earn the Medal of Honor.

During a massive 1965 ambush in Vietnam, he fought through multiple shrapnel wounds to destroy an enemy machine gun nest with a rocket launcher saving his brothers.
