โAs only 5% of lawyers in the United States are Black, it is clear that there is a shortage of voices from the Black community to effect change in the legal system. Much of this change is needed where the law originates--the Legislature. However, less than 10% of more than 7,500 legislators in state bodies are Black. In Florida, the number of Black legislators follows this same disproportionate trend. Black legislators, who are often the proponents of racial and social justice legislation, have a unique experience in meeting the needs of their constituents.
Join Stetsonโs Black Law Students Association and the Stetson Law Democrats on November 14th, 2022, from 6:00PM-8:00PM for "Race and the Law: The Black Legislator," with special guest panelist State House Representative Michele Rayner-Goolsby, who will discuss her experience as one of few Black Legislators in the State of Florida. We hope that this program will inspire participants to become more civically engaged and cognizant of the importance of legislative advocacy. Please RSVP on Engage if you are able to attend.
We strive to promote diversity and inclusivity in all spaces. BLSA and the Stetson Democrats encourage all members of the Stetson Law community to attend.โ
