Today, we proudly celebrate the official fuel source of law enforcement.

For generations, donuts have powered patrol shifts, midnight stakeouts, crime scene perimeters, and meetings that somehow lasted 90 minutes when the email would have taken 12 seconds to read.

Studies have shown that one glazed donut increases patience by 17%, report writing speed by 0.04%, and increases the likelihood of an officer saying, “These aren’t all for me.”

If you see an officer carrying a donut today, please understand that you’re witnessing peak law enforcement efficiency and somewhere nearby, a citizen is taking a blurry photo and preparing to make the exact same joke their dad made in 1987.

Happy National Donut Day.

Today, we honor and celebrate the retirement of Officer Charles Pettway after years of dedicated service to the Gulfport Police Department and the community he faithfully served.

Officer Pettway began his journey with the Gulfport Police Department as a Reserve Officer in 2001. Through hard work, dedication, and a true passion for service, he became a full-time officer on November 20, 2006.

In July of 2007, Officer Pettway found his calling as a School Resource Officer. Over the years, he became far more than just an officer in the schools. He became a mentor, role model, protector, and trusted friend to countless students, teachers, and staff. The impact he made on the lives of young people throughout our community cannot be measured.

Beyond his work in the schools, Officer Pettway also served on the Police Explorer Advisory Board, helping guide and mentor future generations interested in law enforcement and public service.

Anyone who knows Officer Pettway knows his smile, his kind heart, and the genuine care he showed to everyone around him. His selfless service, positive attitude, and unwavering commitment to this community have left a lasting mark on the Gulfport Police Department and the City of Gulfport.

While his presence will be deeply missed, his legacy will continue through the many lives he touched throughout his career.

On behalf of the men and women of the Gulfport Police Department and the citizens of Gulfport, thank you, Officer Pettway, for your years of faithful and dedicated service.

We wish you a long, healthy, and well-deserved retirement. Congratulations, and thank you for everything.

NOW HIRING POLICE DISPATCHERS

Ever wanted a job where you can juggle 14 things at once while somebody yells, a radio screeches, and an officer says, “Signal’s bad”?

Perfect. We’re hiring.

The Gulfport Police Department is looking for Dispatchers who can multitask under pressure, think fast, decode radio traffic that sounds like a Walmart walkie-talkie being used from the bottom of a swimming pool, type faster than people panic, make solid decisions in chaos, and stay calm while everybody else is emotionally buffering at 2%.

If you can think fast, stay sharp, and keep the wheels turning when seconds matter, we want you on our team.

Apply today and become the calm in everybody else’s chaos.

We’ve had a few birds hanging around the sallyport lately, but one in particular has really taken a liking to Ofc. Lee.

Naturally, we named him Flappy Gilmore and officially swore him in as a certiflied officer.

So far his duties include:
* Watching traffic stops from nearby poles
* Leaving tactical air strikes on freshly washed patrol vehicles
* Staring at officers through the glass doors like a disappointed supervisor

We tried explaining chain of command, but he immediately flew over everyone’s head.

We had an amazing time at West Elementary spending time with the kiddos, sharing laughs, and building connections that matter far beyond the classroom.

We brought some cool toys with us, but let’s be honest…the puppies completely stole the show.

Moments like these remind us that being part of the community means more than answering calls. It means showing up, building trust, creating positive memories, and letting kids know their police officers are here for them both in times of need and in moments of joy.

Thank you to everyone at West Elementary for the warm welcome and for allowing us to spend part of our day with some truly awesome kids.

Burglary/ Felony Fleeing News Release:

On May 17, 2026, the Gulfport Police Department arrested 58-year-old Roy Rodney Robinson of Gulfport, Mississippi, charging him with one count of Felony Fleeing and one count of Burglary of a Vehicle.

On May 17, 2026, at approximately 6:17 p.m., officers with the Gulfport Police Department observed a vehicle connected to a recent vehicle burglary in the area of 34th Street near 13th Avenue. Officers initiated a traffic stop, at which point Robinson accelerated and fled the scene.

Robinson traveled at a high rate of speed, disregarded multiple traffic control devices, and operated the vehicle in a reckless manner. Robinson then approached the area of 34th Street near Jody Nelson Drive, where an officer was positioned off the roadway preparing to deploy spike strips. Robinson braked and steered the Lexus directly toward the officer before striking a curb. Robinson then placed the vehicle in reverse and accelerated, striking the front end of a patrol vehicle.

Robinson and the passenger were subsequently taken into custody and transported to the Gulfport Police Department. Both individuals were found to have active felony warrants out of Missouri.

Robinson was processed and transported to the Harrison County Adult Detention Center, where he is currently being held on a $175,000 bond. The passenger was held without bond pending extradition.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is urged to contact the Gulfport Police
Department at 228-868-5959 or Mississippi Coast Crime Stoppers at 877-787-5898.
