Mayor Keating had the chance to catch up with a few Gulfport residents and hear firsthand about their experiences riding the rails. From weekend getaways to a new way to explore the Gulf Coast, it’s exciting to see our community making the most of the Mardi Gras Service.

🌟 Employee Spotlight 🌟

This month, we’re proud to recognize Christina Highsmith, our GIS Analyst in the Information Technology Department!

Christina began her City career in 2022 as a Planner in Urban Development before transitioning to the GIS Division. Today, she gets to work with departments across the City, learning how each one operates and using geography, technology, and data to help solve problems and better serve our community.

What does Christina enjoy most about her job? Getting to work with everyone! No two City departments operate exactly the same way, so every day brings an opportunity to learn something new and understand the important work happening throughout Gulfport.

“Christina is an indispensable asset to our team, playing a pivotal role in supporting Urban Development, Community Development, Engineering, and Public Safety with accurate, data driven GIS solutions,” said IT Director, Stephen Newell.

Outside of work, Christina enjoys spending time with family and friends, hiking, traveling, shopping, and, most importantly, taking her Goldendoodles out for pup cups! Fun fact: If Christina were not working in public service, she’d probably be a horse trainer or a chef. One keeps her outdoors, and the other keeps her close to good food!

Christina says her favorite thing about working in Gulfport is the strong sense of community and being part of everything happening along the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

We’re thankful for Christina’s expertise, enthusiasm, and the important work she does behind the scenes to help keep our City moving forward! 💙

Understanding Community Development Funding

There are often questions about where the City's Community Development funding comes from, how decisions are made, and how those funds are used.

We've put together a straightforward overview of the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) process, including where the funding comes from, who helps determine how it is spent, how projects are awarded, and how spending is tracked.

Our goal is to provide clear information about the process and how these federal funds support residents, neighborhoods, housing and community development in Gulfport.

Take a look at the graphic for a quick overview.
