We are all aware that school districts across the state are struggling financially including struggling to pay teachers and staff a living wage and struggling to perform maintenance and expand facilities to meet growing enrollment and ensure the safety of our kids. The Gunnison Watershed School District is no different. But, have you ever wondered or heard your friends and neighbors ask questions about why with rising property values and taxes this is the case?
If so, please plan to join us for a very informative hour on either Tuesday, March 1st at 12:00 pm or Wednesday, March 2nd at 6:00 pm via Zoom to learn the "why" behind these complex school finance issues.
Great Education Colorado and the Colorado School Finance Project will help us answer a variety of school funding questions, and we'll bust some of the most common myths and misconceptions including:
Our property valuations and property taxes are sky rocketing. Why is the district saying they don't have enough money to fund maintenance, expansion, security, and teacher and staff salaries?
We all agree that teacher and staff pay in the district isn't keeping up with our cost of living. Why doesn't the district raise salaries?
Why doesn't the district work to move us from an agricultural designation to a resort designation to increase our funding like other resort communities have done?
Why aren't we getting cost of living increases for our district staff?
Why can't we use/divert money from the sale of Ma*****na and other funding sources to help fund the schools?
Why doesn't the district live within its means and set aside money that it gets every year to pay for expansion and maintenance needs?
Enrollment growth in the North end of the valley has been consistent for over a decade. Why aren't we getting enough
money from the state to pay for the growth?
