It was a busy weekend for the Gunnison Volunteer Fire Department.

Over the weekend, GVFD firefighters responded to seven calls for service, including:

* 3 motor vehicle accidents
* 2 alarm calls
* 2 wildland fire calls

Our volunteers put in many hours responding to these incidents while staying ready for the next call. From vehicle accidents to wildland fires, our members train year-round to respond to a wide variety of emergencies across our district.

Thank you to all of our firefighters who gave up time with their families this weekend to serve our community, and thank you to our partner agencies for their continued teamwork and support.

Four GVFD firefighters are currently assigned to the Elk Fire with our Type 3 engine as part of the Colorado Mutual Aid System (CMAS).

The crew will be working a 72-hour assignment, supporting firefighting operations and assisting crews working to contain the fire.

Mutual aid assignments like this allow departments from across Colorado to provide additional resources when and where they are needed most, while also giving our firefighters valuable experience working alongside other agencies.

We wish our crew and all personnel working the Elk Fire a safe assignment and a safe return home.

Earlier today, the Gunnison Volunteer Fire Department responded to a structure fire. Thanks to the quick actions of our firefighters, the fire was quickly knocked down and contained to a single unit of the building, preventing it from spreading to the rest of the structure.

We are grateful for the coordinated efforts of everyone on scene and for the support of our community. Incidents like this highlight the importance of rapid response, teamwork, and training.

As a reminder, working smoke alarms and a practiced home escape plan can make all the difference in a fire emergency.

Our crew of four has once again answered the call and is currently on assignment with the U.S. Forest Service here in Gunnison, supporting another Severity assignment.

Severity assignments are implemented during periods of elevated fire danger to increase firefighting resources and improve readiness for new wildfire starts. By strategically positioning personnel and equipment, crews can respond quickly and help prevent small fires from becoming large incidents.
