San Juan Springs Subdivision Evacuation Zone moves to Mandatory Evacuation
Due to growth of the Elk Fire and continued hot and dry temperature, Hinsdale County Sheriff's Office has issued a GO - EVACUATE NOW (RED) Evacuation Notice for the San Juan Springs Subdivision in Evacuation Zone E003A. Zone 3A runs from San Juan Springs Drive north and west of Hwy 149 to Independence Gulch Trailhead.
Anyone living in San Juan Springs on San Juan Springs Drive, Rocky Springs Drive, Silver Springs Drive, Elk Road, Deer Trail or Eagle Drive are now under a GO NOW evacuation notice. Property owners on these roads should EVACUATE immediately.
Evacuation Zone 2 around the Elk Fire is also going into EVACUATE NOW status.
Property owners vacating from Zones in the GO NOW (RED) evacuation status will not be permitted to re-enter the area until the evacuation status has been lifted.
GO EVACUATE NOW (RED) means
- THERE IS AN IMMEDIATE DANGER
- Gather family, essentials and pets and LEAVE IMMEDIATELY
- If you need help, call 9-1-1
- ACT EARLY!
- Evacuate to the north toward Gunnison or south of Lake City.

If you need to evacuate livestock or large animals such as horses, cattle, goats, swine, sheep, the Gunnison County Fairgrounds, located at 275 South Spruce St, Gunnison, CO 81230, has been set up as an evacuation location. Call 970-641-7660 if you are bringing animals. Mandatory vet checks will be conducted on all animals entering.
