Dove season begins September 1st. With many new residents joining our community, the Gunter Police Department would like to explain what you may hear during hunting season.

Gunter is surrounded by rural property where lawful dove hunting may occur. Residents, especially those living near the edge of town, may hear gunshots coming from areas outside the city limits. Hearing gunfire does not necessarily mean the shots are being fired within the city.

Please remember that hunting and discharging fi****ms are prohibited within the Gunter city limits.

If you believe gunfire is coming from within the city limits, contact the Gunter Police Department at 903-433-1717. If there is an immediate danger or emergency, call 911.

🚨 TRAFFIC INFORMATION – State Highway 289 & SCHOOL TRAFFIC 🚨

The Gunter Police Department has received questions and concerns regarding the current traffic pattern on State Highway 289 during school pickup and the use of the improved shoulder for school traffic.

We understand these concerns, particularly as our community continues to grow and traffic volumes increase.

We want to clarify that State Highway 289 is a Texas Department of Transportation maintained roadway, and the Gunter Police Department does not have the authority to redesign the roadway, construct turn lanes, or determine permanent roadway configurations. Additionally, the school pickup and dismissal process, including designated queueing areas, is coordinated by Gunter Independent School District.

Our officers will continue to monitor the area, address traffic violations, and respond to immediate safety concerns when observed.

For concerns regarding school pickup/drop-off procedures or traffic flow, please contact Gunter Independent School District.

For concerns regarding SH 289 roadway design, turn lanes, shoulders, signage, or infrastructure improvements, please contact Texas Department of Transportation.

We appreciate everyone’s patience and cooperation as our community continues to grow. Please remain alert, drive cautiously, and watch for vehicles entering and exiting the roadway during school arrival and dismissal times.

Grayson County Burn Ban!

BURN BAN IN EFFECT FOR UNINCORPORATED GRAYSON COUNTY

During yesterday’s meeting of the Grayson County Commissioners Court, Grayson County Fire Marshal John Weda presented information concerning the county’s increasingly dry conditions and the continued lack of meaningful rainfall in the forecast.

Following his presentation, the Commissioners Court approved Order 26-030, restricting outdoor burning in the unincorporated areas of Grayson County.

The burn ban is effective immediately and will remain in effect through September 30, 2026, unless the Commissioners Court ends it earlier.

The order generally prohibits outdoor burning but provides limited exceptions, including:

Outdoor cooking in enclosed containers in areas free of combustible vegetation
Certain authorized public-safety, agricultural, utility and prescribed-burning activities
Welding, cutting and grinding when all safety requirements listed in the order are followed

A violation of the order is a Class C misdemeanor punishable by a fine of up to $500.

For questions regarding the burn ban, residents are encouraged to contact the Fire Marshal's Office. Please use extreme caution with any activity that could create sparks or ignite dry vegetation.

As students head back to school, the Gunter Police Department would like to remind everyone to use extra caution on our roadways.

School zones will once again be busy with students walking, parents dropping off children, school buses stopping, and increased traffic.

🚨 Please remember:
• Slow down and obey all posted school zone speed limits.
• Stay off your phone and eliminate distractions while driving.
• Watch carefully for children at crosswalks and along roadways.
• Be prepared for increased traffic during morning drop-off and afternoon pickup.
• STOP for school buses when required by law.
• Allow yourself a few extra minutes so there is no need to rush.

A few extra seconds of patience behind the wheel can help make sure every student gets to school — and back home — safely.

The Gunter Police Department is always ready to assist our fellow law enforcement agencies whenever the need arises. Strong partnerships, teamwork, and communication are essential to keeping our communities safe.

Successful outcomes like this are only possible when agencies work together toward a common goal. We are proud to stand alongside our local, county, state, and federal partners in serving and protecting the citizens of North Texas.

On Wednesday, July 8th, at 8:13pm, Sherman Dispatch received a 911 phone call regarding a bomb threat in the 3300-block of Town Center Street. The caller stated he planted bombs around the building and was going inside to shoot and kill people. Officers responded and began clearing and securing the area. No evidence was found to support the threat.

Through the course of the investigation, we were able to identify a suspect. Officers responded to a residence in Gunter, where they detained 18-year-old Justin Grayard. Grayard was interviewed by detectives, during which he admitted to placing the 911 call.

Grayard was arrested for Terroristic Threat and transported to the Grayson County Jail.

We appreciate the collaborative effort that helped bring this investigation to a swift resolution and thank the Grayson County Sheriff's Office for their assistance.

🚗 Never drink and drive—plan ahead and designate a sober driver.
🚔 If you see suspicious activity or an emergency, don't hesitate to call 9-1-1.
