*** Press Release***

The Marshall County Sheriff’s Office began an investigation after receiving a report that an adult male had been communicating with a minor through a social media app. The adult male traveled to Guntersville on May 1, 2026, where he met the victim at a short-term rental property. The victim later disclosed that she had been harmed.

Investigators quickly identified the rental property and obtained information linking the suspect to Indiana. Security footage from the location further confirmed his identity. Due to the suspect’s travel across state lines, the Sheriff’s Office requested assistance from FBI Birmingham.

On May 28, 2026, Investigator Franks obtained arrest warrants for Joel Duron-Esparza, 21, of Middlebury, Indiana, on multiple state charges related to the incident. Duron-Esparza was also federally indicted in the Northern District of Alabama for interstate travel involving a minor. The FBI arrested him at his residence in Indiana on August 17, 2026 and he remains in federal custody. After federal proceedings conclude, he will be held in Marshall County without bail pending an Aniah’s Law hearing.

The Marshall County Sheriff’s Office extends its appreciation to the Marshall County District Attorney's Office, the FBI Birmingham Division - Huntsville Resident Agency, Marshall County DHR, and the Marshall County Child Advocacy Center for their joint efforts in this case.

***PRESS RELEASE**

On July 28, Deputies took a report from a 64 year old female victim. The victim stated that on the night of July 26, 2026, her 36 year old son came into her residence irate with her, and he began strangling her. The victim stated that she attempted to call 911, but the offender took her phone, and refused to let her make any calls. The victim stated that she was strangled until she passed out, at which time the offender released her. Deputies noted bruising on the victim’s arm, along with a scratch on her neck, and other visible injuries consistent with her having been assaulted.

Investigator Hall was assigned the case, and identified Kellis Busbin as the suspect. Hall obtained warrants for Domestic Violence Strangulation, Elder Abuse 2nd Degree, both of which are felony offenses. Busbin had been living in a mobile home on his mother’s property, but fled from there after the incident. MCSO Deputies have made numerous attempts to locate him for over a month.

On August 18, 2026, K-9 Deputy Sgt. Cagan Ridgway was traveling in the 600 Block of North Brindlee Mountain Parkway when he observed Busbin driving. Sgt. Ridgway initiated a traffic-stop and took Busbin into custody without incident. Busbin was booked into the Marshall County Jail on the warrants with a $60,000 Property Bond.

“I want victims of domestic violence and elder abuse to know that the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office takes these cases seriously. We will investigate them thoroughly, we will pursue those accused of committing these crimes, and we will continue looking for them until they are located and brought before the court. As always, I appreciate the dedication of the men and women of the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office who work every day to protect the citizens of Marshall County.”

The last few weeks, our inmate work crew has been busy cleaning up roads across the county to help keep Marshall County clean. Some of the roads are Brasher’s Chapel Rd, Thompson Falls Rd, the Pleasant Grove Rd area, and Swearingin Rd. In all, 153 bags of trash were collected from the roadways. Please don’t litter. We will continue to do our part in keeping Marshall County clean.

***PRESS RELEASE***

The Marshall County Sheriff's Office has arrested a Guntersville woman following a shooting into an occupied residence in the Mt. Hebron community.

At approximately midday on Saturday, August 1, 2026, deputies responded to a residence on Hambrick Drive in Douglas after receiving reports of an individual firing shots into an occupied home.

When deputies arrived, they found the victim and her family safe and unharmed. They discovered multiple gunshot holes in the front door of the residence, along with shattered glass. The suspect had fled the scene before deputies arrived.

Through the course of the investigation, deputies identified the suspect as Jamie Leann Chandler, 50, of Guntersville, who is the victim's sister-in-law. According to the victim, Chandler had previously threatened to kill her.

Deputies quickly obtained a description of the suspect's vehicle and utilized the Flock Safety camera system to determine the vehicle's movements and direction of travel. Based on that information, officers with the Albertville Police Department located the vehicle on U.S. Highway 75 near Martling Road and conducted a felony traffic stop.

Chandler was taken into custody without incident. During the investigation, deputies recovered a handgun from the vehicle that is believed to have been used in the shooting.
Chandler has been charged with Attempted Murder and is currently being held in the Marshall County Jail pending an Aniah's Law hearing.

The Marshall County Sheriff's Office extends its appreciation to the Albertville Police Department and all assisting law enforcement agencies for their swift response and outstanding cooperation during the investigation.

"Deputies responded to the scene not knowing what to expect when they arrived. They did an outstanding job of quickly gathering critical information and relaying it to surrounding agencies. By utilizing the Flock camera system, deputies were able to track the suspect's vehicle as it left the county and later returned, allowing law enforcement to determine its direction of travel. This coordinated effort enabled officers to locate the vehicle and safely take the suspect into custody within approximately one and half hours of the shooting. We greatly appreciate the exceptional teamwork demonstrated by all of the agencies involved in bringing this dangerous situation to a safe conclusion."
