As a r**e crisis center with more than four decades of experience supporting survivors, we know how deeply sexual violence affects individuals, families and communities. The recent findings reported by Northwestern University and the University of Chicago are troubling. Sadly, they reflect only part of the reality; many survivors never report the violence they experience.
Our first response is always to believe and support individuals when they speak about the violence they have endured. At the same time, we must recognize that responding to sexual violence is only part of the solution. Prevention education is essential to changing the conditions that allow r**e and dating violence to persist.
These reports, along with the recent spotlight on the incident at Cornell University, underscore the urgent need to continue dismantling r**e culture and equipping people of all ages with the knowledge and skills to prevent sexual violence. It is never too early to begin conversations about body safety, healthy relationships, consent, and respect. This past year, ZCenter’s prevention education reached over 14,000 students, including through our work with colleges and universities.
We want survivors and those supporting them to know that help is available. ZCenter’s 24-hour support line is available at 847-872-7799. College students can also access resources on their campuses, including crisis advocates, counselors, and Title IX coordinators.
There is much work to be done, and ZCenter remains committed to both supporting survivors and preventing sexual violence in our communities.
