There is a threat for severe storms this afternoon and evening across much of the state. Large hail, damaging wind and heavy rainfall are possible with storms. Tornadoes are a secondary threat. Storms may linger overnight into Wednesday before pushing east. The rest of the week looks mostly dry though a shower or storm cannot be ruled out...especially late Thursday night and Friday. It will turn hot and humid for the weekend with highs on Saturday well into the 90s and heat indices near 105. Make sure you have a way to stay cool this weekend. More storms are possible Sunday night but details on this will come later.

Dry weather has been a problem for much of central and western Iowa the past one and a half months.

Below is a look at the June rainfall over Iowa as well as the rainfall over the region for so far in July. Unfortunately for portions of central to western Iowa, there has been much less rainfall in both June and July. In June an area of the state just west of Des Moines only received about 1 to 2 inches of rainfall. In July, an area of much of central Iowa has seen little if any rainfall through yesterday, July 12th.

In both June and July so far, more rainfall has occurred over northern and eastern Iowa this summer with a large area of 5 to over 10 inches of rainfall in June across northeast and eastern Iowa.

Tuesday through Wednesday scattered thunderstorms will bring opportunities for additional rainfall to the state. Some locations are likely to see over an inch within the stronger thunderstorms Tuesday into Wednesday. More details on rainfall amounts will be available later today and tonight as the storm nears Iowa.

Enjoy the "cool" weather while you can. After a couple days in the lower 80s expected Tuesday and Wednesday, heat is expected to quickly build back into the area. By Friday temperatures across most of the state may reach into the 90s, followed by potential for mid to upper 90s Saturday and heat index values 100+. Should Saturday hit currently forecast temperatures, it will likely be the hottest day of the summer so far for most of the state. Ugh. 🥵👎

Severe Thunderstorms Possible Today

Scattered strong to severe storms will develop across northern Iowa this afternoon and move southeast into eastern Iowa this evening. Over the remainder of the area, an isolated strong to severe thunderstorm is possible.

Large hail and damaging winds will be the primary threats. While widespread heavy rain is not anticipated, a few pockets of heavy rain could result in ponding of water and poor driving conditions. Sunday will be dry and cooler with pleasant sunshine throughout the region.
