Today—Medal of Honor Day—hits a little different when you’re working on these.

Bud Day’s story… what he endured as a POW… it’s hard to even wrap your head around. Trying to capture that in paint has been humbling.

Next to it is a sketch of Darrell Lindsey—a reminder there are so many more stories that deserve to be told.

That’s the mission behind the Medal of Honor Mural Project.

Not just artwork—remembrance.

Not just history—legacy.

And we’re just getting started.

If your company believes in honoring these heroes and wants to be part of this project, we’d love to visit—[email protected]

In this installment of ‘History Off the Beaten Path,’ we take a look at one man’s American spirit expressed artistically in towns all over the United States.

I can’t contribute much, but I like to create artwork to honor those who serve our country. I don’t always get to put as much time and effort into these sketches as I would like, but here is a rough tribute honoring two Iowa soldiers who gave their lives in the recent Iranian attack in Kuwait.

Maj. Jeffrey O’Brien, 45, of Waukee, and Sgt. Declan Coady, 20, of West Des Moines, answered the call of duty and represented the very best of our state and our country. Their sacrifice is a reminder that the freedoms we enjoy are defended every day by men and women willing to stand in harm’s way for the rest of us.

My prayers are with their families, their fellow soldiers, and the communities that raised them.

We are also learning of a third service member with ties to West Des Moines who may have been lost in the same attack. As more details are confirmed, our hearts and prayers will be with that family as well.

Freedom lives because they were willing to defend it.

🇺🇸 Iowa will remember.

Grit.
Heart.
Country.

Jack Hughes and delivered a moment America won’t forget.

Had to sketch it. 🇺🇸🏒

America turns 250 this year. 🇺🇸

As Iowa begins preparing for this historic milestone, I wanted to contribute something from my own lane—as an artist. I have a bunch of ideas rolling out through my sketches, but for now…

Iowa’s theme for America 250 is “America’s Harvest”. To me, that represents the land, the work, and the people who have helped shape this country generation after generation.

This illustration is my artistic take on that idea, using the offical national 250 as a springboard. While not an official logo—just a visual response to a meaningful moment in our nation’s history.

Here’s to a year of remembering where we’ve been, honoring those who built it, and thinking thoughtfully about what comes next. 🌾

As families gather this Christmas season, we pause to remember those who never made it home.

I drew this image as a reminder of those who never got to come home—those who gave everything so we could.

Behind every wreath is a sacrifice, a family, and freedom preserved.

We honor them today—and always.🇺🇸🎄

From one Iowan, in honor of two Iowans.

I created this illustration in honor of the two Iowa Army National Guard soldiers who lost their lives while serving in Syria.

They answered the call, served selflessly, and represented Iowa with honor.

Our thoughts are also with the interpreter and all others affected by this tragedy.

We remember them. We honor their sacrifice. And we hold their families, fellow Guardsmen, and loved ones in our prayers.

🇺🇸 This Veterans Day, I want to take a moment to recognize and thank the incredible veterans who serve on our Freedom Rock Foundation Board — leaders who continue their service long after wearing the uniform.

Their love of country, commitment to community, and dedication to honoring fellow veterans help keep the Freedom Rock mission alive and growing across America.

👏 Board Members Who Served:
• Shelly Richardson – U.S. Army
• Frank Richardson – U.S. Marine Corps
• Isaac Sims – U.S. Army
• Henry Stone – U.S. Air Force
• Phil Thompson – U.S. Army
